    Our latest application note features NANOVEA's 3D Non-Contact line sensor profilometer and focusses on how the device can be used to measure the surface roughness of paper. Surface roughness plays a crucial role in paper as it directly impacts print quality. Both macroscale features, such as poor fibre dispersion, and microscale features, like particle size distribution, contribute to paper’s surface properties. Traditionally, the Parker Print-Surf method is used to measure paper roughness. It involves applying varying pressures to the paper with a 51µm wide ring, and the airflow between the ring and paper surface is measured to determine roughness. However, a limitation of this method is its inability to accurately capture microscale features, which can affect print quality. Nanovea’s 3D Non-Contact line sensor profilometer offers a solution by detecting both macro and microscale features, thanks to its high-resolution, fast scanning capabilities. Large surface areas can be analysed, and roughness is calculated using the arithmetic mean height (Sa) from the height data collected. Since paper is prone to deformation due to its thinness, the non-contact nature of the sensor ensures that the height measurements remain unaffected by any surface deformation. The application note expertly showcases the ability of the Nanovea high speed systems to collect high resolution data from large samples.     Last week I spent a couple of days visiting customers in Sweden for our dosimetry plastic product line, and wow what a beautiful country. When I travel somewhere new, I always take my running shoes and although I didn't get out into the forests properly, I still managed to scratch the running itch with a disgustingly early run on the last day. Dosimetry plastic is a thermoset resin made to high tolerances which acts as a particularly sensitive etched-track detector for personal neutron and radon dosimetry. A detector using this kind of plastic is commonly referred to as an Alpha Track Detector. Now, thanks to improvements in the Light Attenuation Length of their Scintillating & Wavelength Shifting fibers (BCF-XL) product range, researchers can meet the expanding performance requirements of their detectors.     Luxium Solutions recently had two major wins in the area of High Energy Physics! This has been enabled by our series of Scintillating & Wavelength Shifting fibers (BCF-XL) with Light Attenuation Length > 4 meters. This improved attenuation length allows researchers to meet the expanding performance requirements of their detectors. One of the applications of the BCF-XL is the Hidra2 Dual Readout Calorimeter. The goal of this project is to build and qualify a calorimeter, exploiting the dual readout technique in order to measure the electromagnetic (EM), part of hadronic showers event by event. We are proud of all of the hard work and dedication into improving this product line to secure these significant opportunities.     In addition to budget and expertise constraints, time pressures are another reason many researchers choose to outsource their lab testing to Mi-Net. Many of our clients need accurate test results to be generated quickly and this is not always possible given the time constraints facing researchers. To get the necessary equipment in house often requires time consuming CAPEX or grant applications which are followed by long winded tender processes and long lead times. Even if the necessary equipment is available in house, it can be heavily used, sometimes poorly maintained, and difficult to get time on. Running tests in house also means that researchers need to analyse the data personally. This can be very time consuming and take up valuable resources, especially if the researcher does not have experience using a particular measurement technique. Outsourcing means that the need to personally run tests and carry out analysis is taken away from the researcher, freeing them up to focus on other tasks.
