In Stitches is a recent exhibition at Midlands Arts Centre (MAC), showcasing work by British artist Su Richardson. It was my pleasure to speak with Su about In Stitches and learn more about the messages and inspiration behind her work. Su transforms traditional female pursuits to explore themes of motherhood and female and environmental concerns. Each unique piece tells a story, whether it is caring for family members, complexities of the maternal body, love, loss or illness. Thanks to Rosi Byard-Jones for organising. The Prism Open 2025 group exhibition is now on show in the Community Gallery at Midlands Arts Centre until 18 May 2025. This selection of images by photographers from across the West Mids showcases different ideas of belonging, shaped through the people who make us who we are, the spaces where our lives unfold and the objects we leave behind. This International Women's Day, we're thrilled to announce the opening of Su Richardson: In Stitches! This exhibition presents some of Richardson's early work alongside recent soft sculptures that explore themes of motherhood, caring for family members, the maternal body, breastfeeding, loss and illness. It is the largest institutional retrospective of Richardson’s work to date, and the first solo exhibition in her hometown, showcasing the breadth of her fifty-year career. Every sari has a story, and we’re looking to share yours. Presented by Midlands Arts Centre and Sampad South Asian Arts & Heritage, Birmingham, Sari Stories is a new exhibition opening in May 2025. As part of this exhibition, we’re showcasing personal reflections on the sari. We’re inviting people (ages 16+) from Birmingham and the Midlands to share a photograph and the story behind their sari - your story could reflect a special memory or a significant life event tied to wearing the sari. These will be considered for potential inclusion in the community exhibition at MAC - we may also feature a selection of saris and related objects. Deadline to submit: Fri 7 March 2025.
