  • Delighted to report, we are the third local authority in Scotland to sign the Buy Social Pledge, an initiative that empowers organisations to use their purchasing power for social and environmental good across Scotland’s communities. Committed to fostering social value and community wellbeing through our procurement practices, the council, where possible, includes social enterprises in invitations to tender. Recently the social enterprise Energy Training Academy (CIC) was awarded the Midlothian Council contract to deliver the Green Skills Programme and the Managed Learning Programme. The Green Skills Programme trains tradespeople to install heat pumps, solar panels and battery storage. The Managed Learning Programme trains local unemployed people to become qualified gas and heat pump engineers. BuildU Scotland is also a Midlothian based social enterprise that supports the unemployed and school leavers to enter the construction industry and are one of the many social enterprises across Scotland that has registered with the Buy Social initiative to deliver their services. Midlothian joins Edinburgh and Glasgow City Councils in signing the pledge. • Delighted the new Midlothian Energy Centre – a joint venture between the council and Vattenfall Ltd – is now officially open. The energy centre will take heat from the energy-from-waste facility (operated by FCC) next door in Millerhill and distribute it to the new town of Shawfair, other nearby housing developments, and beyond. Council Leader Councillor Kelly Parry and Chief Executive Grace Vickers helped cut the ribbon marking a key milestone in this low carbon heating project. In this first phase, the heat network is expected to save over 2,500 tonnes of CO2 per year, the equivalent of taking 1,200 cars off the road. • Great to see the #ESESCRD Annual Report now live! Read more about the benefits the City Region Deal is bringing to the area. Video highlights include more about how Edinburgh & South East City Region funding is supporting a new junction at Bush Loan and a sustainable transport corridor along the A701 prioritising public transport, walking and cycling in Midlothian and wider area. The new junction and Active Travel improvements are the first two phases of an eight-phase plan to ease congestion along the A701 by building an A701 Relief Road and an A702 Relief Road. Removing a significant number of cars, many of which are travelling from Penicuik and the Scottish Borders along the existing A701, is also key to helping further growth at Midlothian Science Zone, including the University of Edinburgh’s Easter Bush Estate.
