"Earlier this month, the great and the good of the UK #BCorp business community descended on Oxford for the two-day #LouderThanWords festival. It was an opportunity for current and aspiring B Corps to congregate and be inspired by some of the great strides being made towards transforming the economy into one that places social and environmental impact at its core. Of course, this isn't easy to do. Nor can it be done quickly. Indeed, we took the decision to embark upon our own journey to become a B Corp business two years ago. It has been an incredible process in so many ways and we're not there yet. And that's OK because whether we gain certification or not, the steps we have taken during this process have made us a better business than we were before it started. With the media awash with stories on the growth of the B Corp movement, the question that many small and medium-sized businesses in particular are currently asking themselves is why are so many eager to be part of the movement? There are almost 3,000 certified B Corp businesses in the UK right now – a three-fold increase in under 12 months. It is a rate of growth that shows no sign of slowing down. In fact, it appears to be accelerating. Driving this is less a desire to become 'seen' as doing good and more about responding to the growing demand and expectations of customers and employees to ensure that the businesses they do work with and for, and their supply chains, operate in ways that minimise environmental and maximise social impact. There are significant business benefits to be generated from operating in this way too. Indeed, according to @B Labs – the organisation behind B Corp certification – B Corps see an average growth rate of 26% versus the national average of just 5% for all businesses in the UK. Employee attraction and retention rates among certified businesses far exceeds those of non-certified businesses. B Labs has found that the average increase in headcount for B Corps is around the 14% mark compared to the average for all companies of 1%. Staff attrition rates among B Corp employers is halve that of non-certified businesses – 8% versus 16%. This reflects research by TotalJobs. It showed that 28% of candidates "check a company's sustainability practices before applying for a job" (British Business Bank). Against this backdrop, it is clear to see that there is a strong business case for being a B Corp or in the very least more responsible. But there is another equally valid reason for taking this route: it's simply the right thing to do. Monahans is currently awaiting the outcome of our B Corp accreditation application. If any of you reading are considering applying to become a B Corp and want to better understand what is involved, please do get in touch."
