About us
Mother of Pearl is a contemporary, responsible womenswear brand that celebrates individuality, authenticity and sustainability. Our design mantra is classic, but never boring. "Amy Powney is one of the most clued up designers on the subject of sustainable fashion that has ever set foot in Vogue House. The creative director of Mother of Pearl has been on a mission to convert her brand into one that’s able to call itself ethical and sustainable – and, unlike the numerous labels who have recently jumped on the eco bandwagon, actually mean it.” - Vogue In 2022 an independent documentary, Fashion Reimagined, was released about Amy's mission to create a sustainable collection from field to finished garment and transform the way we engage with fashion.

We know that us brand accounts can occasionally–okay, maybe even often–be guilty of talking about ourselves too much. Which is why we're elated to share that this is now an Amy Powney fan account. Amy is a friend of The Flock, an inspiration to our team (and many others), and a trailblazer in sustainable fashion. So, it just makes sense to pause our usual self-indulgence to applaud her. Amy joined Mother of Pearl as an assistant in 2006 and quickly worked her way up to become the brand’s Creative Director and owner. Known for it’s no-frills aesthetic and impressive sustainable credentials, the brand has dressed everyone from Paloma Faith to Gwyneth Paltrow. In 2022, the documentary Fashion Reimagined came out, detailing Amy’s quest to design a completely sustainable collection from field to finished garment. We sat down with her to discuss her professional journey, where she finds inspiration, and what brands she's keeping an eye on, so that you can join us in fangirl-ing over this dear friend of ours.

So I’m excited for all the new innovations coming in.” Read more by clicking below. #MotherofPearl #sustainablefashion #fashionnews

🌿 Loved this eye-opening interview with Amy Powney, Creative Director at Mother of Pearl, discussing the urgent need to reshape narratives around clothing's origin stories and the call for sustainability in fashion. 💭 Reminded me of her captivating Ted Talk from last year, advocating for a more mindful approach to consumption. 📽 Watch her TED Talk here: https://lnkd.in/eu27TnWD Let's stand with Amy in shaping a more sustainable and responsible fashion industry! 🌍💚 #Sustainability #FashionIndustry #EnvironmentalResponsibility #TEDTalk #leadership
Some of our clothes are over 200 million years old. From forced labor and wage theft to polluting waterways, driving deforestation, and reinforcing a culture of disposability and waste, the fashion system is built on exploitation. The average fast fashion garment is worn just seven times before it's discarded, a number that’s sure to drop as the rate at which we buy clothes quickens, and manufacturing quality drops. Yet, those same garments are made from fossil fuel-derived polyester and nylon, which can be traced back to prehistoric times, while others may well be made using wood pulp from thousand-year-old trees. It’s an origin story that’s widely overlooked, and Mother of Pearl's Amy Powney wants to change that. Only then can the industry begin to take responsibility for the scale of destruction it is causing. For Atmos, Powney speaks with Culture Director Daphne Chouliaraki Milner on the urgent need to reframe the origin stories of our clothes.
