We develop, apply and promote innovative statistical and data science approaches to advance biomedical science.
About us
The MRC Biostatistics Unit (BSU), at the University of Cambridge, provides a unique and stimulating environment that results in world-leading biostatistics research. The Medical Research Council has had a statistical unit since its inception in 1913. Over one hundred years on, the BSU is one of the largest groups of biostatisticians in Europe. It is a major centre for research, training and knowledge transfer, with a mission to advance biomedical science and human health through the development, application and dissemination of statistical methods. BSU’s critical mass of methodological, applied and computational expertise provides a unique and stimulating environment of cutting edge biostatistics, striking a balance between statistical innovation, dissemination of methodology and engagement with biomedical and public health priorities.

On my way back to London, after attending a fantastic 1.5 day course on Response Adaptive methods for #clinicaltrials at MRC Biostatistics Unit at Cambridge. Massive thanks to Sofia S. Villar Lukas Pin David Robertson Rajenki Das for delivering an excellent course with lots of interesting discussions considering the context of trials' aims and the methods' assets- limitations. Highly recommend it to everyone working in trials!! Stay tuned for their courses 👉https://lnkd.in/ebeKr7i8 Check out the content of their talks here 👇

PhD Student at University of Cambridge. Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute. Churchill College. Alan Turing Fellow.
I’ve had the privilege of having Oscar M Rueda as my PhD supervisor for over four years. His guidance has been invaluable, helping me grow as a researcher. His lab is a perfect blend of mathematical modelling, statistics and biology! I couldn't have asked for a better mentor! Come and join the MRC Biostatistics Unit as a postdoc in his group at the University of Cambridge – this is a fantastic opportunity for anyone passionate about statistics, machine learning, and cancer research! https://lnkd.in/dp8nrZ2w

Last week, I completed my internship at the MRC Biostatistics Unit. We investigated both supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods to try to detect cancer in patients and to monitor its severity, focusing on achieving good performance while ensuring our methods were explainable. I modified and developed methods such as mixture models and non-negative matrix factorization to maximize their performance on our data. I hope that these methods can be refined further and perhaps one day be used to improve cancer treatment. My favorite part of the internship was getting to meet so many wonderful people at the BSU. Hearing about many intriguing topics in modern bio-statistical research, as well as sharing ideas with my fellow interns, was truly amazing. At the end of the internship, we had the opportunity to present our work to the whole department and see what everyone else had been working on. I also discussed my project with some senior members of the BSU and got even more ideas for new things that I look forward to exploring in the future.
