Colonial context in the UK, celebrating heritage and decolonising our present — sounds like a Matriarch session 💥 We were at Redington this week with our classic session, ‘Putting the Then in the Now’ and delving into conversations around Empire and how it informs our everyday. Whilst this topic has become more prominent in our country, it’s still hard to access or engage, without feeling like we’re going into a heated debate — that’s where we come in. How can we have conversations like this with compassion and space for others? A huge thanks to Isabel Berresford and Monjur Chowdhury for coordinating this so well and Redington for being such a fantastic crowd 👏 — want to work with us? https://lnkd.in/dKrDYHC5 Ria Kalsi Sarah Nazir

To truly understand race in the UK, we need to talk about colonial context. Nope, not the other C word. We're talking about everyone's favourite, colonialism. Most people only come face to face, understanding colonialism at university, like our founder, Ria, did. After her first encounter with the word, she ended up studying it deeply and writing dissertations on decolonisation. But 18 is far too later to be learning about her own context as a second generation Indian immigrant. We should all understand colonialism because it: 💥 underpins our modern understanding and beliefs surrounding race 💥 is one of the major root causes for immigration and the subsequent multiculturalism in the UK 💥 it contextualises many British people's stories and lives 💥 is the tapestry of British history that we have to understand and own Understanding colonial context is not just designated for Brown and Black people. It is a conversation for us all. It's integral to being British and truly understanding one another's stories, background and heritage. Which is exactly why we're not scared to cover it in our sessions, get in touch and get properly acquainted with colonialism! #matriarch #mtrrch #matriarchltd #colonialism #empire #britishempire #british #inclusion #britishasian #diversity #racism #britain

The last few weeks have been overwhelming for people of colour in the UK. Serendipity meant that our last client delivery of the summer was with FTI Consulting. We delivered our 'Free to Be Me' workshop about celebrating heritage and skills to empower ourselves our identity. This came off the back off South Asian Heritage Month but was a vital opportunity to connect with the RISE (D&l) Network at FTI. It gave participants a space to be heard, speak on their experiences and learn how to advocate for themselves. The space we take up matters and our identity is valid - this session reaffirmed it and we were proud to facilitate that. If you'd like to create this opportunity for your employees, find out more below https://Inkd.in/dKrDYHC5 A huge thanks to the team at FTI for coordinating this: Kwaku Aning Aisha Chaudhary Yasmin Prior Naomi MG Smith Chart.PR MCIPR Patrice Crosbourne Hamza Moulvi #freetobeme #southasianheritagemonth #dei #deiworkshop

With the current racial terrorism and riots, there is a lot of fear and hate circulating. There's a lot to be done, we can all be part of it and how we show up for immigrants and people of colour in the UK right now is essential. How we empower and take care of those around use right now needs to be a priority. In response to that, Matriarch is offering a free 30min soundboarding chat. This can be used for guidance, soundboarding or just a safe place to exist and chat. Book your call below and please share this with anyone who could benefit, especially any people of colour in your network. Light will always shine through the dark and Matriarch is here to support you all to do that. Let's keep going. https://lnkd.in/eRAkDPYB

Celebrating South Asian Heritage Month at NKD! 🎉 We had a fantastic time last week when the team at NKD invited us to run our 'Putting the Then in the Now' workshop - a session covering British Colonial context and exploring the South Asian identity in Britain! 🌍 💚 This was a session of insight and celebration, hearing from Ria and NKD employee, Raj, on their heritage and families stories. 👉 It was also great to get chatting about our understanding of colonialism and sharing ideas of how we can decolonise our present! Thank you to the team at NKD for welcoming us and being so engaged - providing this attention and space for us to share our stories is vital! ⚡ #southasianheritagemonth #racialinclusion #diversityandinclusion #diversity #britishasian #inclusion #inclusionworkshop #workshopfacilitation (NB: error in the slide shown in the first picture - the Bangladesh and Afghanistan flag labels should be the other way round)

Be a babe and make the introduction 🥲 This is your midweek challenge - if you know someone who could help someone else, be a babe and make an introduction. Having had a lot of helping hands and the privilege to access amazing connections, I'm very intent on sharing knowledge and connections and 'pay it forward' to anyone I know. Especially when you're young or you're entering a new industry, it can be so hard to 'meet the right people' or 'build your network'. This is a huge reason Matriarch is striving to provide a life education outside of education, so we can stop gatekeeping opportunities and make them more accessible! Network is a significant part this. - so be a babe this week, make an introduction, be part of someone's success story. #networking #maketheintroduction #beababe
