Fancy finishing your week with a sneak peak inside the new Beaulieu Park Station? We invited rail enthusiast and YouTube vlogger, Geoff Marshall for an inside look around the project. Alongside our colleagues from Network Rail and Essex County Council, we took Geoff on a tour of our works including the station interior and the new platforms. You can take a look for yourself and see what Geoff thought in his video report here: #OneMurphy #construction #rail #infrastructure Chris Cayton William Ross Network Rail Essex County Council Steven Beauchamp

To mark today's World Mental Health Day, members of our Transportation team, with the help of Network Rail, placed a pop-up coffee stand on Castleton Station providing free hot beverages to customers on their daily commute. Sometimes we can forget the importance of taking a moment to reflect on our own mental health and by encouraging commuters to stop and enjoy a treat, we hoped to give them a chance to do just that. It was also an opportunity for our team to thank the local community for their support as we carried out our project to replace a rail bridge over the M62. We want to help break the stigma around mental health, and even a simple conversation can make a big difference. If you need to talk to someone, here are some organisations you can contact: The Lighthouse Charity (for construction workers and their families) – call 0345 609 1956 (UK) / 1800 939 122 (ROI) Samaritans – call 116 123 MIND – call 0300 123 3393 (UK) Campaign Against Living Miserably – call 0800 58 58 58 #Murphy #NetworkRail #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealthMatters #BreakTheStigma #SelfCare #Wellbeing #Community Chris Cayton Karen Scott Sarah Elizabeth Barnes Peter Shrader

Our Cambridge South Station team recently undertook an informative safety stand down day alongside Network Rail and South Rail Systems Alliance (SRSA). The highlight of the day was a talk from former Olympian and a European triple-jump medallist, Nathan Douglas, who talked to the team about his methods for resilience and demonstrating how your physical health can impact your mental health. The day was instrumental in our team's preparations for an upcoming busy period of possessions, whilst demonstrating the necessity for people to go home safely everyday with both physical and mental health intact. #OneMurphy #MoretoMurphy

Our Infrastructure team is currently carrying out work on Severn Trent’s Hinckley to Hartshill sewage treatment scheme and using two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) to create tunnels to house new pipework. We challenged students from the nearby Hinckley School to name one of the TBMs and they chose Ada, in honour of Ada Lovelace - a local heroine who pioneered early computing and encouraged the involvement of girls in STEM subjects. Students attended an unveiling of the Ada TBM complete with graphics representing STEM and the impacts of Ada Lovelace’s work in computing. #OneMurphy #MoretoMurphy Active Tunnelling Ltd

For our final post for inclusion week, we would like to highlight our Prison Leavers scheme. This hiring initiative is for people who are serving a prison or community sentence and works to offer a pathway into meaningful long-term employment after leaving the criminal justice system. Open days and training opportunities are offered for those currently in prison to provide a chance for upskilling from practicing professionals in the industry, ensuring that participants are ready to move straight into work upon leaving prison. #OneMurphy #MoretoMurphy #NationalInclusionWeek #ImpactMatters #MurphyintheUK #NIW2024 Inclusive Employers

Last week two of our apprentices, Michael Roughley and Jack Sweeney, met Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester at the launch of his Beeline careers tool – an online platform that helps young people find jobs and career advice. The tool is part of the roll-out of the Manchester Baccalaureate (MBacc) which offers students who don’t want to go to university an alternative route into key industries in the region. Mike and Jack were on hand at the event to talk to current students about their own career paths and highlight the opportunities a job in construction can offer. Murphy is part of Greater Manchester’s Business Board and as the largest direct employer of emerging talent in the construction industry, we are committed to encouraging young people into the industry. Our crews are currently completing testing and termination activities on our Monaraha solar farm project, which covers a 70-acre block of land in Co. Tipperary. This project will deliver over 20MW of renewable electricity to the Irish grid, with a 32MWp (DC Capacity) and 21.76 MVA (Inverter AC Capacity). Murphy mobilised to site in late February of this year and in less than seven months, we have completed all of the main civil and electrical installations required to facilitate the operation of this solar farm. Murphy is sponsoring Solar Ireland 2024, the Irish Solar Energy Association (ISEA) Annual Conference, taking place on Tuesday 1st October at the RDS in Dublin. Stop by our stand (Number 22) on the day to speak with our team about the wealth of the expertise and experience which Murphy can bring to your next project. In our second post for the UK’s National Inclusion Week, we are highlighting our partnership with Ambitious about Autism. We were the first UK construction company to sign the Autism Charter, and we hope to help address the issue that the UK has approximately 700,000 adults and children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and only 29% are in any form of employment. Creating job opportunities means that a better quality of life can be afforded for autistic individuals, as well as helping the future of construction by building a more neurodiverse and inclusive workplace where everyone feels secure and comfortable to be themselves. #OneMurphy #MoretoMurphy #NationalInclusionWeek #NIW2024 #ImpactMatters #MurphyintheUK

Following the demolition of the old Castleton viaduct bridge earlier in the month, we have now successfully completed the installation of the new two span steel bridge deck with associated rail track renewal over the M62 in Manchester for customer Network Rail. The 40m long, 450t bridge was fabricated by our specialist steel fabrication team at our state-of-the-art fabrication workshop in Newbridge, Co Kildare and installed using a self-propelled modular transporter. The bridge was placed precisely onto the new cast in-situ cill beams over the central pier and abutments by our Transportation team. Following successful landing of the bridge, the team then renewed the track to ensure safe and efficient operation of the rail and highway network for future users.
