Roismi R. absolutely yes!!
“Treat us like statistics… we will become statistics.” "For young people leaving care, this phrase carries deep significance. It speaks to the cycle created when we view care leavers merely as numbers—statistics that outline higher rates of unemployment, homelessness or mental health struggles. When care leavers are treated as data points rather than individuals, we risk ignoring the complex personal journeys that have shaped their lives and in doing so limit their access to the opportunities and tailored support they deserve. Every care leaver has a unique story and potential for success that goes far beyond any statistical category. Yet too often the systems designed to help them transition to independence are overwhelmed by case numbers, quotas and outcomes-based measurements. This approach can strip away the human element of support, leaving young people feeling unseen and underserved. When a young person is expected to meet the odds laid out for them by a statistic, the very system intended to empower them may inadvertently keep them bound within that cycle. The message is clear: if we treat care leavers as mere numbers, we are reinforcing those very statistics. But if we see them as resilient individuals—each with their own strengths, dreams and goals—we have a chance to break the cycle and help them thrive. It is about valuing care leavers for who they are, recognising their potential and dedicating resources to understanding their individual needs. With guidance, access to mental health support, career opportunities and mentorship, care leavers can achieve incredible things. So let us remember that every care leaver we encounter is more than just a statistic. They are our future leaders, innovators and changemakers. By offering them real pathways to success, we can empower them to shape their futures, transforming their lives beyond what any number could predict."
