Fresh Food is Boosting FMCG Growth in 2024! What Does This Mean for Emerging Brands? Nielson Market Research has identified a positive shift in the FMCG sector volume growth in Q1 2024 for the first time since 2021. Cooling food inflation (down to 3.7% in March) is encouraging shoppers to add more to their baskets, especially fresh and perishable foods, which have surged by +6.8% in volume. 🍓🥦 But, while volumes are rising, value growth is slowing—down from +7.1% in Q4 2023 to +6.2% in Q1 2024. The competition is tougher than ever, with private labels outpacing branded products and 23.4% of all Q1 2024 spending driven by promotions—a leap from 20.1% last year. 🛒💥 Perhaps more interestingly, discounters are slowing down (+4.5% growth), lagging behind traditional retailers (+7.1%) for the first time since 2021. 📉 So, what does this mean for the food and drink sector, and where is the opportunity for emerging brands? 🌟 For emerging brands, this is a pivotal moment. There’s a clear opportunity in offering fresh, high-quality products at competitive prices. With discounters losing steam, there could be more chance for premium innovative offerings to shine.
