The new edition of Journalists at Work will be discussed at a special NCTJ event, hosted by Reuters on 26 September 2024. Journalists at Work is independent research commissioned by the NCTJ periodically to provide valuable information and analysis about the characteristics and views of journalists working in the UK. The report is based on the results of a survey of more than 1,000 journalists about their conditions, training, recruitment, qualifications, and career development. New topics explored in this edition include safety and well-being, the use of artificial intelligence, and working from home. Are you a good time manager? Is your team brimming with good time managers? Or is poor time management causing issues in your team? Good time management is essential in a demanding newsroom so it’s important to know how to tackle it when it rears its head. Follow these seven tips, extracted from the NCTJ’s Leadership and Management for Journalists training course. 1️⃣ Do explore tools and techniques to support better time management – it can be learnt 2️⃣ Do listen to the other person – put yourself in their shoes and consider their point of view 3️⃣ Do look for skills gaps – eg, are they using systems incorrectly? This could be the issue 4️⃣ Don’t be dismissive – everyone is prone to poor time management at one time or another 5️⃣ Don’t mistake poor time management for a lack of ability – they might just need support 6️⃣ Don’t deal with poor time management in busy periods – create time to resolve together 7️⃣ Don’t ignore it! I'm very pleased to share news that Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has launched a new online course for journalists forced to seek exile in the UK. After speaking to many exiled journalists about the kinds of professional challenges they face after relocating here, we wanted to develop a programme that would help them understand how the UK industry works. The free e-learning course covers topics like UK media law, public affairs, writing styles and an introduction to UK media. We designed it in partnership with the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ), and are very grateful to the team there for hosting it on their Journalism Skills Academy website. A lot of our work with exiled journalists focuses - rightly - on safety, as attacks, threats and intimidation often continue even after the journalists have moved. But supporting them to continue working is also really important. Exiled journalists are often best placed to report on the countries they come from, even from a distance, as they have the sources, expertise and experience to ensure those countries don't become information black holes.
