Today, Leeds Community Homes Ltd have launched ‘Community-led housing for all: Opportunities and challenges for black and minority ethnic community-led housing.’ This significant new research finds that community-led housing has the potential to tackle racial inequalities within the housing system, but there are barriers to achieving this that need to be addressed. Building a fair society is reliant on diverse representation in all spaces. But the research also reveals the under-representation of black and minority ethnic people within community-led housing. As a co-funder of this research, and as a long-term committed funder of the community-led housing sector, we’ve published a detailed response to the research outlining the steps we’ll be taking in response to the findings, particularly as we plan for the next phase of our strategy. Take a look at our response and the full research findings here: https://lnkd.in/eeuZNPFb Claude Hendrickson MBE Tom Moore Yael Arbell Gary Hartin Jimm Reed Henri Baptiste

At Labour's recent party conference, we hosted a panel discussion, in collaboration with the New Statesman, on the future of housing and the need for a long-term strategy. The event featured Minister for Housing Matthew Pennycook MP, Chair of the Treasury Select Committee, @Meg Hillier MP, Satvir Kaur MP, @David Orr, Homes for All lead and former CEO of the National Housing Federation, and our CEO Kate Markey. In our latest article, we share some reflections and highlights from the event (plus photos). Thank you to everyone who attended the session (it was standing room only!) and our speakers for their contributions to a fantastic discussion. https://lnkd.in/ewpy9i62

More than 130,000 households are living in temporary accommodation. 1.2m households are on local authority social housing waiting lists. 21% of privately rented homes fall short of basic safety and decency standards. In the midst of a housing crisis, we hear worrying stats like this all the time – and while they have the potential to convince the public of why we need to change our housing system, they’re unlikely to have much influence alone, no matter how compelling. How we frame housing data matters, especially if we want it to have an impact. If you write about the importance of improving and reforming housing in the UK, join FrameWorks UK, in partnership with Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) and the Nationwide Foundation, for a webinar on 9 October that will offer useful insights and tips to help you: - Understand why framing data makes a difference to your communications - Hone your skills – with practical guidance and examples so that you can use numbers to make the right impact - Decide if, when, and how to make the economic case for changes to our housing system Register today to secure your place and be part of the conversation: https://lnkd.in/efwQrDqT
Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: Framing numbers, statistics and the economy to talk about homes. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar.

We were very proud to host a panel discussion at Labour conference this week, in collaboration with the New Statesman, featuring housing minister Matthew Pennycook, David Orr, Satvir Kaur MP, Meg Hillier MP, and our CEO Kate Markey. The event focused on the future of housing and the opportunities the new government has to shape it over the coming years. The launchpad for the discussion was our Homes for All campaign and the need for the government to design its housing strategy with the long term in mind. If it doesn’t, the housing crisis will persist, and people will continue not to be able to access the decent and affordable homes they need. It was inspiring to hear such a positive message from the speakers and to see such a packed room! You can read the article Kate published in the New Statesman ahead of the event here: https://lnkd.in/edT3azsj.

I'm really proud of this review, giving you a detailed, warts-and-all view of how projects supported by the Community Housing Fund have progressed. Have a read below. It takes a huge amount of legwork by many... legs?... in my team, and among enablers and groups, to collate the data to feed into this analysis. Many thanks to the Nationwide Foundation and Esmée Fairbairn Foundation for their ongoing core funding for this kind of work.
Following a review we've conducted of the Government's Community Housing Fund (CHF), the findings highlight the positive impact it had in driving affordable community led housing projects across England. Key highlights include: > Over 4,200 homes developed or in the pipeline, with 913 already built or under construction. 90% of these homes are affordable, many in areas where traditional developers struggle to build. > Projects funded through the CHF were more likely to incorporate innovative housing models, like Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and self or custom-build options. > An impressive success rate, with only 5% of projects failing and a significant return on public investment—£2.70 of value for every £1 spent. This review demonstrates the importance of community led development and the role it can play to increase social housebuilding and diversify the housebuilding industry. The Nationwide Foundation team are getting ready for next week’s The Labour Party conference in Liverpool and our New Statesman panel event on Monday (23 September). Our CEO Kate Markey will be joined by David Orr, Homes for All Lead and former CEO of the National Housing Federation, Minister for Housing Matthew Pennycook MP, Chair of the Treasury Select Committee, Meg Hiller MP, and Satvir Kaur MP to discuss the long-term approach needed to fix our nation's housing crisis. If you’re attending the panel event or the conference, Kate would love to meet for a chat – just drop her a message on LinkedIn. Ahead of the conference, the New Statesman have published a thought provoking piece from Kate: How should Labour address the housing crisis? It's a big question, but one we hope to propose the answer to at our panel on Monday (spoiler alert: a long-term vision for housing). https://lnkd.in/edT3azsj

New research released❗🏙 Today we’ve released the results of groundbreaking new research which provides critical insights into the impact of private rented sector legislation. Focused on the impact of Scottish tenancy reform, this research provides valuable learnings for shaping legislation not only in Scotland, but also in England, following the introduction of the Renters’ Rights Bill in Parliament last week. Led by Indigo House and funded by the Nationwide Foundation, the comprehensive RentBetter research project was carried out across five years, with surveys and interviews conducted with thousands of tenants and landlords to assess the true impact of changes to Scottish law. Visit our website to find out what lessons can be learned from this research to help shape strong legislation across the UK that will provide a better future for renters: https://lnkd.in/dJy7HycR
