The importance of seeing your carbon offsets hard at work. Jacob Hurtley and the team from Nature Broking clients, Elevation were thrilled to visit Bank Farm with our CEO, Luke Baldwin, last week. Having recently purchased carbon offsets as part of their sustainability journey they were excited to look round the farm and hear how it all works from Doug Wanstall, the mastermind behind UK Carbon Code of Conduct’s regenerative agriculture credits, and Pete Wain and Ian Bailey from project developers Beyond Zero, as well as putting up with the inevitable additional (terrible) jokes from Luke! Jacob Hurtley, ESG Director at Elevation, ‘It was a really insightful day and I enjoyed learning about the different processes and activities that are completed at Bank Farm as well as the wider projects that Beyond Zero are involved in. The whole team had a great time and we would like to thank Nature Broking for organising a rewarding site visit.’ Luke Baldwin, CEO of Nature Broking: ‘Site visits to our UK based projects are an important way to increase awareness of how these carbon credit-generating projects actually work on the ground and give our clients the security of seeing why their investment is so vital.’ Elevation is a specialist investment manager in the healthcare real estate sector. Their strong ESG credentials mean they are focusing on four UN Sustainable Development Goals, one of which is Climate Action. Already on their carbon reduction journey through their partnership with Inhabit, they have chosen to offset their unavoidable emissions in the UK through purchasing holistic credits which not only remove carbon but also restore habitats for nature.

Nature Broking is delighted to announce a new partnership with carbon accounting dynamo, C Free. C Free’s steadfast mission is “to empower businesses of every size to make informed decisions for impactful, efficient climate action” and being able to access Nature Broking’s supply of high integrity high impact carbon offsets exactly encapsulated what they wanted to offer to their clients – climate mitigation with nature restoration in the UK. Nature Broking sources a range of credits from rewilding and regenerative farming to Enhanced Rock Weathering. These holistic nature-based carbon credits not only remove carbon but also restore habitats for wildlife and combat nature loss. C Free guides its clients through their carbon calculations using AI and its team of experts, enabling them to make informed decisions on how to reach Net Zero. “The decision to partner with Nature Broking was made easier for us by the rigour of their due diligence process giving us and our clients reputational peace of mind. We had been on the hunt for UK based offsetting projects as some of our clients had been looking for local impact. The ability to visit the projects we are investing in was also a big plus.”, says Eddie Fitzgerald-Barron, CEO and Co-Founder of C Free. Luke Baldwin, CEO of Nature Broking, is looking forward to working with C Free: “Their core principles chime so well with our own as we are both committed to taking positive action against climate change and nature loss. We are looking forward to working with C Free and enabling them and their clients to see what their investment is helping build in terms of habitat regeneration and carbon sequestration”.

Doug Wanstall from UK Carbon Code of Conduct explaining in detail how much could be achieved with £22 billion of government investment in nature based carbon removal projects which transition farmers to regenerative agriculture practices without affecting food production. See also Nature Broking's Monday blog and linkedin post. Beyond Zero Pete Wain Ian Bailey #carbon #nature #naturefriendlyfarming #biodiversity #carbonwithnature
Scaling regenerative agriculture & restorative systems to reverse climate change and biodiversity collapse by driving investment into projects that issue high integrity nature backed carbon credits approved by the UKCCC
Let’s talk carbon capture and storage. The UK government recently announced an investment of £22bn into this relatively unproven tech. It does work but at present is crippling expensive and inefficient. IF the £22bn creates a type of Moore’s law multiplier effect in efficiency then it could be money well spent, but it’s a risk and it will only capture carbon and deliver no other co benefits. Let me explain another option and how investing the same money into nature based solutions would deliver a massive impact. Using the same money we could conduct detailed baselines aligned with global carbon standards and help all farms in the UK (circa 17m ha) and an area in another country of the same size to get to net zero and beyond through detailed farm specific plans to reduce emissions and increase carbon removals. Each farm would take on a number of interventions to increase habitats, adopt regenerative and restorative food production systems, plant trees, restore peatland, agroforestry, use enhanced rock weathering (the list goes on) whilst still producing plentiful and nutritious food for the country. Part of the investment would help pay for interventions to be deployed at scale. This would lead to no less than 1.5 t/ha/yr additional CO2 removal beyond that required to achieve Net Zero on each landholding. The combined interventions would not only deliver significant net carbon removal of no less than 48m tonnes per year (6 times the ambition for the CCS tech recently announced) but massive co benefits too. Nature would flourish, flooding would reduce, water quality would improve and farmers margins and food production would become more resilient. So my question to HM Government is why take a risk with the unknown when we know that massive changes in land management can deliver so much more. #climatesolutions #naturebasedsolutions #netzero #regenerativeintensification #biodiversity #naturalcapital UK Carbon Code of Conduct Beyond Zero Pete Wain Ian Bailey Nature Broking Environment Systems Roger McKerlie

Match the funding? The government has announced it is pledging £20 billion towards Carbon Capture - a tech approach to removing and storing carbon from the atmosphere - which is a WIN. Why doesn't it ALSO pledge an EQUAL amount to carbon removals through regenerative farming, rewilding, enhanced rock weathering and biochar, all of which also help restore and improve habitat and outcomes for nature? - which is a WIN/WIN. Climate and nature can be helped together through these types of carbon removals. But the cost of baselining and developing a project in the first place can be prohibitive and put off farmers and landholders who would otherwise be keen to adopt more nature and climate friendly practices. This could be solved by more easily accessible public and private funding. Time for more education on decision-makers on how to be climate and nature positive?
