Our First Technical Roadmap Released: Accelerating Heat Pump Adoption Decarbonising residential heating is critical for the UK’s net-zero goals, but heat pump adoption remains slow. While over 1.3 million gas boilers are installed annually, only 60,000 heat pumps were fitted in 2023. How do we close this gap? 📢 The EPSRC Network+ for Decarbonisation of Heating and Cooling has developed a new roadmap to accelerate heat pump adoption. It highlights key challenges and solutions across: ✅ Technology R&D – Improving efficiency, affordability, and flexibility ✅ Infrastructure – Preparing homes and electricity networks ✅ Policy & Leadership – Driving long-term strategic change ✅ Business & Market Innovation – Creating better financing and installer models ✅ Cultural Adoption – Shifting consumer perceptions ✅ Consumer Experience – Making adoption easier 💡 Seven key takeaways: Invest in R&D, integrate energy efficiency, enable flexible use, develop clear policies, innovate in business models, cut costs, and simplify the customer journey. 📄 Read the full roadmap: https://lnkd.in/e6mvgpJA Let’s work together to make heat pumps the default choice for UK homes! #NetZero #Decarbonisation #HeatPumps #SustainableEnergy #EnergyInnovation

The Net-Zero Research and Innovation Network aims to unlock the opportunity of transitioning to a Net-Zero future.
About us
The Net-Zero Research and Innovation Network aims to bring together the researchers, innovators, policymakers and enablers who will unlock the opportunity of transitioning to a Net-Zero future. The Network will host dozens of conferences, events, workshops and online webinars to support the wider dissemination of UKRI (United Kingdom Research and Innovation) funded projects and to maximise their impact. Additionally, the Network team will facilitate joint academic and industrial secondments. The Network team develop technical roadmaps to define the current state-of-the-art and the potential for arising technologies. These roadmaps are used to support the development of calls for research funded through EPSRC Network+.

A great start to our Conference on Waste Heat Recovery and Utilisation in Cardiff this morning. We are grateful to Ed Sherriff from the Welsh Government for opening remarks highlighting the support and need for waste heat capture and use. We’ve also heard about the research at Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd Swansea University Brunel University London on materials, conversion and transmission of power and energy. Many thanks to Carlos Ugalde for hosting this event. Cardiff is always a great place to visit! And to Savvas Tassou for Co-organising after nearly forty years at Brunel. And excellent day for networking.

We really enjoyed meeting everyone who presented and attended at our EPSRC Network+ Heating and Cooling Summer School last week. We were blessed with the weather and a variety of thought provoking discussions ranging from Commercialisation, new technologies, social acceptance, fuel poverty and waste heat from data centres. The feedback from attendees was great, so we'll try to make this a regular event. Thanks to C-DICE, Durham University, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero equiwatt Arup Savvas Tassou Andrew Smallbone Julie McLoughlin Molly Westby Holly May Lister for all of your support!

Only a few days left to register for this great FREE Summer School at Durham University 12-14th August.
Researchers active in the field of Heating and Cooling Decarbonisation are invited to attend a 3 day Summer School exploring the latest research and research gaps in the transition to netzero heating and cooling. The Cool Summer School will feature presentations from leading researchers and practitioners including Arup, DESNZ and Equiwatt, as well as knowledge exchange with colleagues, visits to regional exemplar projects, discussions on networking and career development and a chance to bid for funding for research ideas. Spaces are limited for this school, and applications are especially welcomed from Early Career Researchers and PhD and/or those included within minority groups. Further details of the three days can be found below Following on from the Summer School, the Network has also organised a 1.5 day Flexible Funding sandpit where researchers are encouraged to submit their project ideas and form a consortium to bid for 2 pots of around £40,000 funding.
