A new energy connection to power the future

About us

NeuConnect is a privately-financed £2.4bn / €2.8bn interconnector that will create the first direct link between the UK and German electricity networks, connecting two of Europe’s largest energy markets for the first time. Sponsored by global investors Meridiam, Allianz Capital Partners, Kansai Electric Power and TEPCO, NeuConnect will become one of the world’s largest interconnectors with 725km of land and subsea cables forming an ‘invisible energy highway’ between the UK and Germany. The new link will allow 1.4GW of electricity to flow in either direction, enough to power up to 1.5 million homes, and offering an important boost to energy security while also helping to integrate renewable energy sources in the UK and Germany. Along with creating an important new piece of energy infrastructure, NeuConnect is currently the single-largest Anglo-German investment project and will represent an important symbolic link between the Great Britain and Germany economies. As one of the first interconnectors to be delivered using ‘Project Finance’, NeuConnect will also help to increase choice and competition in the British and German markets.

This month, NeuConnect were delighted to welcome a delegation from the Singapore Government's Energy Market Authority (EMA) and Ministry of Trade and Industry (Singapore), offering chance to discuss the delivery of the NeuConnect project, the huge benefits it offers the UK and Germany’s climate and energy security goals, and what role interconnectors could play in Singapore’s own decarbonisation plans. Achieving #NetZero will rely on global collaboration, so NeuConnect’s chair Julia Prescot CBE and Chief Operating Officer Andy Paton CEng welcomed the chance to share their insights from the NeuConnect project and to hear more about Singapore’s plans.

As the UK marks Net Zero Week™ it is important to recognise the vital role that energy #interconnectors can play in reducing carbon and tackling climate change. The NeuConnect link alone will help to deliver a net reduction in carbon emissions of 13 million tonnes of CO2, the equivalent of planting 23 million new trees or removing 400,000 cars from the road for a year. Foto 📷 : Wilhelmshavener Zeitung/Alina Zacher
