New BPF Retail Board Chair: Morgan Garfield We are delighted to announce NewRiver REIT's Morgan Garfield as the new Chair of British Property Federation's (BPF)'s Retail Board. Morgan Garfield brings extensive experience in retail real estate, having co-founded Ellandi, managing over £1.25bn in shopping centre assets before Ellandi was acquired by NewRiver REIT last year. Advocating for retail spaces as vital community infrastructure, Morgan Garfield aims to highlight the positive impact of retail on towns across the UK. His role as Chair will focus on promoting investment into UK retail while collaborating with stakeholders. During his career, Morgan Garfield has been involved in the acquisition and management of shopping centres across the UK, ranging from local community centres to major destinations. He has worked successfully with a variety of stakeholders from investors to debt providers, local authorities, occupiers and community groups. His breadth of experience gives him vital insight into the investment case for retail and how to create successful thriving destinations. As Chair of the BPF Retail Board, he will push for business rates reform and changes to the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954 to enhance commercial leasing processes. Under his guidance, the Board will seek increased cooperation between occupiers, emphasising energy efficiency improvements and supporting electric vehicle charging installations through simplified planning regulations. NewRiver partners with Royal Mail📮 We're delighted to be the first company to partner with Royal Mail on the rollout of its new parcel locker network across our portfolio. We're rolling out more than 60 parcel lockers at our shopping centres and retail parks, including assets owned by NewRiver and assets managed on behalf of third party owners through our capital partnership business, allowing us to leverage our expansive, geographically diverse portfolio and market-leading platform, whilst supporting Royal Mail's ambition to roll out this exciting new concept at scale and speed. NewRiver REIT will receive a modest income from the new partnership, and the new Royal Mail lockers will provide a convenient and complementary service for our shoppers as well as helping drive additional footfall and customer spend for our retailers. The roll out has launched at two shopping centres owned by NewRiver in Essex - Grays Shopping Centre in Grays and Newlands Shopping Centre Witham in Witham - and is expected to continue over the next six months. #physicalstores #omnichannel #royalmail #retail #realestate #community Katie Healey Anna Malley https://lnkd.in/es6rAJaE

We would like to pay tribute to Martin Barber, who sadly passed away last week. Martin founded, floated and led Capital & Regional, remaining as CEO until 2008. Martin was a highly respected leader and leaves an impressive legacy, having also founded CenterPoint Properties Inc and Primesight. NewRiver are proud to have acquired the business that Martin founded and send our condolences to his family and friends at this sad time.
Partner | Founder, Investor & CEO | Hospitality, Music, Film & Television, Consumer | Director/Advisor/Consultant - Cherry Equity Partners, Loliss Capital, My Supper Hero, Domain Capital, Soho House, Botinkit Robotics
I’m sad to share that my father, martin barber, passed away on Tuesday in Texas at the age of 80 after a relatively short battle with lung cancer. My father was a charismatic and inspirational entrepreneur and a prominent figure in the property business until his retirement in the mid-2000s. He left school at 16 and, at just 18, became “Britain’s Youngest Estate Agent”, founding Martin Barber & Partners. There were no partners at the time, but he thought the name made the business sound more important! Over an awe-inspiring career, he founded, floated, and led Capital & Regional, which grew to become one of the UK’s largest property companies—a FTSE 250 company managing £5 billion in assets. He also founded, ran, and floated Primesight Plc, the outdoor advertising specialist, and CenterPoint Properties the first industrial REIT in the US, which was sold in 2006 for $3.5 billion. After retiring after the 2008 financial crisis, he moved to Texas with his wife, Linda and their daughter Elise. I will be forever grateful that I was able to be with him in Texas when he passed away. The messages I have received show just how admired he was, and I hope no one will mind if I share a few of them: “A wonderful man. A great mentor whom I deeply admired. I owe him so much.” “Inspirational and generous.” “A truly inspirational, great man.” “An inspirational leader.” “A huge influence.” “A true visionary.” “A wonderful man—kind and considerate.” Growing up, I was immensely proud of his achievements and thought of him as a "ganse macher"! I have always tried to make him proud of me in return, and I know he thrived on all of our successes. He was an accomplished bridge player who could hold his own with some of the world's top bridge players. Zia Mahmood referred to him as "gifted". He was never happier than on the golf course, and I know his golfing buddies will have many fond memories of their Pinehurst trips. He leaves behind a big hole, and even bigger shoes to fill, but we are so grateful for the incredibly moving messages which have received over the past few days. Thank you.

A new way in to Highcross Shopping Centre, Leicester.... following the successful planning consent for four new entrances at one of our capital partnership assets. Four entrances will be reimagined to improve customer accessibility, wayfinding and city centre linkage, whilst the contemporary new designs celebrate the city's vibrant fashion and textiles heritage – a city once recognised as one of Europe’s most prosperous cities due to its booming textiles industry. Works are expected to begin in Spring 2025, in tandem with commitment from our retailers who are simultaneously investing in their own stores at the centre. Anchored by John Lewis & Partners, Zara, Apple and Next, Highcross Shopping Centre has over 150 shops, together with a great food and beverage including wagamama, PizzaExpress, Turtle Bay Restaurants and Nando's UK & IRE, as well as Showcase Cinemas UK and Treetop Golf Adventure. As part of the rejuvenation strategy, the NewRiver REIT capital partnerships asset management team has diversified and elevated the occupier mix, introducing more than 10 new occupiers including MANGO which is due to open in Spring/Summer 2025, with a number of additional brands and new concepts due to open later this year. The strategy has been focused on reinvigorating this popular destination shopping centre in the heart of #Leicester to create a vibrant retail and leisure experience.
