About us

The National Estates and Facilities team within NHS England oversees and supports the operations and development of the NHS estate. We ensure that local estates teams are supported so that patients can continue to be cared for in a clean, safe, and fit for purpose environment. Its responsibilities also include: • Promoting consistent high standards throughout the estate through setting national policy and strategy, and providing technical standards and guidance. • Driving greater social value and resilience through our approach to capital delivery and assurance. • Keeping sustainability and innovation at the heart of our work to deliver a Net Zero estate in line with the NHS’s targets. • Ensuring that the NHS estate and facilities are optimised to deliver world-class healthcare to the nation.

  • ‼️ ‼️ Calling all NHS Director of Estates, cleaning staff, IPC leads, nursing colleagues and ambulance staff ‼️ ‼️ On Thursday 13th March from 3.30pm until 4.30pm, NHS England is hosting a webinar to set out the newly published National Standards for Healthcare Cleanliness 2025. The Cleaning Standards version 2025 has recently been announced which has added appropriate tools for ambulance trusts, to capture the very different challenges that they face on a daily basis.   This webinar will include an update on the cleaning standards and a conversation with one of the ambulance trusts working group to reflect on the methodology and impact that the cleaning standards will drive.   • And last but by no means least, we have the incredible Sue Hardy. Sue's colleagues unsurprisingly had some great things to say about her as well... 🗣️ 'Sue is one of our Regional Delivery Directors (RDD), working across the London region. She holds a joint role with the Greater London Authority (GLA) – the Mayor of London’s office. Sue is also a member of the Estates Senior Leadership Team. Sue is diligent and hard-working. She regularly coordinates and addresses complex issues to ensure progress can be made. Sue plays an active role in the senior leadership team, bringing considered challenges and sharing her expertise. Sue deserves recognition because she does a lot to help and coordinate people, often behind the scenes. Her efforts are crucial in ensuring that progress is made, even though they may go unnoticed by others. Sue has a significant impact on the NHS's ability to make strategic progress. Her dedication and coordination skills are invaluable, enabling the organisation to navigate complex challenges and achieve its goals.'   • To round off our #IWD Spotlight Series this year, we've got a double header of two more amazing members of the Estates and Facilities Team. 👏 First up of the two, we have Lucy R. who's role in our workforce team is vital to managing and supporting thousands of staff across the country. Here's what Lucy's nominator had to say about her: 'Lucy works in our national workforce team and leads efforts to improve access for young people and enhance equality. She is dedicated to ensuring that opportunities are available to all, regardless of background. Lucy is incredibly compassionate and always has the best interests of young and less advantaged people in mind. She is a fierce advocate for equality and will fight for it in any situation.   • There were so many fantastic nominations for our #IWD Spotlight Series that the posts are going to have to have to spill over into a second day! Next up is NHS England's Associate Director of National Estates Capital and Transactions, Jo Dolby. Here's what Jo's colleague had to say about her this week: 'Jo is the Capital and Transactions Lead in our team. She manages assurance for all high-value business cases, leads NHS England's billion-pound procurement framework, and provides invaluable advice on contracting and PFI. Jo is dedicated, hard-working, and diligent. She consistently goes above and beyond to deliver, often against incredibly tight deadlines. Jo deserves recognition because much of her work happens behind the scenes and often goes unnoticed. This time, we have Mary A., our Technical Net Zero Energy Lead. 🎉 Those of you with a great memory will remember that we celebrated our next nominee as part of #NationalApprenticeshipWeek this year. It's safe to say that Mary's impressing everyone! Here's what her colleague had to say about her: 'Mary is our Technical Net Zero Energy Lead. She spearheads efforts to reduce the NHS’s carbon footprint from energy, implementing strategies, policies, and initiatives to ensure we achieve our goal of net zero in our buildings by 2040. In addition to her role, she is pursuing a Master’s degree in Energy Futures. Mary is exceptional. She works tirelessly to find solutions to complex technical issues and continually strives to improve our carbon footprint and energy efficiency, ultimately reducing costs. She has been instrumental in creating the world’s first net zero building standard, implementing a standardized approach to energy procurement across the NHS, and leading initiatives to upskill the energy management workforce. Mary deserves recognition for her unwavering dedication and innovative approach to reducing the NHS’s carbon footprint. Next up is our amazing Master Planning Lead, Helen Griffin! This is what one of the team had to say about Helen: 'Helen is our Master Planning Lead.   • The #IWD Spotlight Series continues with Emma Brookes MSc, the team's Head of Soft FM Strategy and Operations at NHS England. The brilliant Emma is described very accurately by her colleague below. Happy International Women's Day Emma!
