An independent body working to tackle ethnic inequalities in health & care.
About us
We are an independent expert body, established by the NHS to examine the health inequalities experienced by Black and minority ethnic communities in England. We work as a proactive investigator by actioning evidence and insight, providing evidence-based health policy recommendations, and facilitating long-term transformational change across health and care. We are data and evidence-driven, as well as factual and solution-focused. We are supported by NHS England and hosted by the NHS Confederation.

“A health care service that doesn’t work for everyone is a healthcare service that doesn’t work, and we need a robust system of accountability if we’re going to change that.” The NHS Race & Health Observatory’s Assistant Director for Policy & Strategy, Sam Rodger, comments on Care Quality Commission’s latest State of Care report: https://lnkd.in/eAmtEPaE

Do people with the poorest health really live the longest? It's surprising that life expectancy estimates from the Office for National Statistics show that ethnic minority groups in England and Wales have high life expectancies, especially at the oldest ages, despite having some of the poorest health outcomes throughout their lifetime. In this excellent blog for the NHS Race & Health Observatory, experts take a closer look at the approach used by the ONS in producing estimates of life expectancy by ethnicity, examining the data sources and methodology used. There is clear value to society in knowing who dies from #preventable causes and the reasons for their death. In this BMJ opinion piece, Carl Reynolds and I outline how doing so can help to prevent future deaths and tackle longstanding #inequalities in health: https://lnkd.in/ecbiW7us

Racial inequalities in health are unjust, immoral and wrong - and yet they are avoidable! As the UCL Institute of Health Equity review: ‘Structural Racism, Ethnicity and Health Inequalities in London’ outlines, we need greater accountability from leaders and from organisations to tackle and prevent racism from continuing. It was a pleasure to Co-Chair an excellent Advisory Board for this review with Sir Michael Marmot. https://lnkd.in/ebUrA-_7
