  • 🌍World Menopause Day (Friday 18th October) serves as a vital platform to raise awareness and promote understanding of menopause. This day encourages open dialogue around the physical, emotional and psychological changes individuals may experience during this journey and aims to dispel myths and reduce stigma. With around 40 per cent of Trust staff going through the menopause, understanding and addressing the challenges they face during this time is crucial for creating an inclusive and supportive workplace. With this in mind, today marks the launch of the Menopause Hub - a one-stop shop of resources that colleagues can access at anytime, anywhere. 💻The Menopause Hub houses our newly launched Menopause Policy and Toolkit, helpful resources and support and explains how to complete the new e-learning module. Donna Griffiths, Chief People Officer, said: "We're proud to share our commitment to creating a menopause-friendly workplace and the steps we've taken to support our colleagues and raise awareness across the Trust. "Listening to colleagues who are a part of our network, we have created a Menopause Hub - a 'one-stop shop' for colleagues to access the Menopause Policy, e-learning module, Me and My Menopause tool and much more."💙

  • Patients who have spent time in critical care are being sought to take part in ground-breaking research that aims to speed up their recovery. Each year, more than 140,000 people are discharged alive from critical care units in the UK and many have ongoing physical and psychological issues which last for many years. The new PHOENIX study, sponsored by UHCW and funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), is looking at the feasibility and cost effectiveness of providing structured, personalised physical rehabilitation and nutrition plans for patients who are recovering on a ward after leaving ICU. • More than 100 delegates, including patients, surgeons and clinicians from across the country, gathered at University Hospital for a conference celebrating a decade of excellence in robotic surgery. Over the past decade, thousands of patients have benefited from robotic surgery thanks to the Trust’s vision to invest in the latest technology for carrying out extremely difficult keyhole operations. Consultant surgeon Jawad Ahmad, who chaired the conference, said: “Ten years ago, the Trust had the vision to get the funding to buy this very expensive equipment and it has paid dividends over the years. “We are now operating on the colon, pancreas, gallbladder, the kidneys, thorax, and ENT. We are now a multi-disciplinary centre of excellence, and we have benefited thousands of patients. This conference is to showcase our journey from very humble beginnings to where we are today – a national and international leader in robotic surgery.” Today, UHCW has 20 trained surgeons and six proctors in hepatobiliary and pancreatic, colorectal, gynaecology, thoracic, ENT and urology. Last year, the team carried out 862 procedures. Between January and July this year, 461 procedures have been undertaken.

  • Freedom to Speak Up month got off to a flying start at UHCW this October with news that the Trust has been shortlisted for two top awards for our innovative SpeakUp app. We are among the finalists in two categories of The Leadership Awards 2024, which are run by the Institute of Leadership. We have been shortlisted in the Digital Leader Award category, which recognises organisations who are using technology to impact change, and also in the Employee Wellbeing Award category which celebrates those who have developed health and wellbeing programmes that have been welcomed by their employees for physical, emotional or financial wellbeing. Our SpeakUp app enables any UHCW employee to safely raise concerns, including anonymously, about what worries them at work. It’s user-friendly, accessible 24/7, and ensures that every member of staff can voice their concerns conveniently and confidently. Our shortlisting for the awards came as the National Guardian launched Speak Up Month 2024. The theme this year is ‘Listen Up’, focusing on the power of listening in encouraging people to feel confident to speak up. The winners of The Leadership Awards 2024 will be announced at a ceremony in London on 15th November.
