And something a bit light hearted seeing as it is Halloween!
At this spooky time of year our attention turns to the ghosts that haunt the Norfolk countryside, often presenting themselves as a damp, mist-filled depression in a field corner or an ominous dark patch in an arable crop. I am of course talking about ghost ponds, who’s presence still haunts the land despite having been filled in for many decades. It is estimated that over 50% of UK farmland ponds have been lost over the last century, many of which were to accommodate modern farming practices and larger machinery. Earlier this month I had a close encounter with a ghost pond whilst out on a farm in South Norfolk and managed to capture the image below. Thankfully, it is possible to resurrect these historic ponds and their ancient seedbanks which lay dormant beneath the ground. If you think your land might be haunted by a ghost pond, please get in touch with Norfolk FWAG who can provide expert advice and funding for restoration work.
