CEO at Learning Curve Group, using business' objectives to craft successful, stress free training strategies.

The last few months have been an absolute whirlwind here at Learning Curve Group.   From welcoming His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh to our Head Office, to raising over £13,000 at our Charity Ball, to successfully navigating another challenging but rewarding Hard Close, and finally welcoming Alan Strickland MP - all while continuing to transform lives through learning in the background - it's been some of the busiest but most fulfilling few months!   The power of the Purple People never fails to amaze me when it comes to pulling together and pulling through. They take everything in their stride to ensure we are always improving, adapting, overcoming and excelling.   The figures from Hard Close show just that, with over 50k learners supported in the last academic year - I'm always blown away at what our team can achieve. Knowing we've played such a crucial part in the development of so many individuals' careers, confidence, employment prospects and social mobility is incredibly rewarding.   I believe that being transparent about business performance is key in creating a motivated, inspired and invested workforce. And so, last week, it was great to be able to livestream to the entire business and provide updates on each area. We celebrated our wins, shared challenges, answered questions, and looked to the future!   It was also great to see the government's commitment to addressing skills shortages this week, and their recognition of the impact of these gaps on the economy. After meeting with Alan, I felt even more strongly about the government’s dedication to skills development in our area. I look forward to seeing the initiatives laid out in the budget begin to materialise.   One of the things I'm most passionate about is ensuring socio-economic factors and diverse backgrounds are never a barrier to individuals achieving success and pursuing their dreams. And tonight, the team and one of our brilliant apprentices are off to the Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards, where I'm hoping we can bag a few more awards for the cabinet! 👀   I couldn't be prouder of every single Purple Person who have put in so much hard work in the last few months. Let's see what the final months of 2024 has in store for LCG! 💜

Proud to be CEO of AELP.

I am pretty gloomy about the budget and its impact on the skills sector and therefore our ability to drive the growth the country needs. But one silver lining: we took note - as others have too - that the increases in employer NICs make employing apprentices under the age of 25 and earning less than c£50k more attractive, because employers still do not have to pay NICs on them. Not much, but something: https://lnkd.in/eyBgzECt

  • Well done #NCFE 👏

    Product Manager at NCFE

NCFE have had 20 Level 2 and 3 qualifications approved through cycle 1 of the post-16 reforms, more than any other AO, in: ✔ Health and Social Care ✔ Education and Early Years ✔ Digital We're extremely proud of these new, world-class qualifications, and they will be funded for delivery from August 2025. It's exciting to launch new programmes but is anything being defunded next year? You may have read about the Department for Education's 'pause and review', which will confirm any defunding decisions for 25/26 and concludes in December. The uncertainty surrounding this way well leave you wondering about the future, but we've got your back. Check out our explainer video below which analyses all the current policy announcements to attempt to bring clarity to this situation. Also, visit our reforms page (https://lnkd.in/ebjpGCbc) for more information and book a personal consultation for your team. My inbox is always open for advice as well. Regardless of the twists and turns of new government, NCFE is committed to continuity of provision in all our key sectors. No learner left behind!

  • Post budget thoughts from Adam Barnes. It’s going to be interesting watching this space and how things start to pan out! 🧐

Here are some initial thoughts following today's #autumnstatement and what this might mean for #fe, #colleges, and #trainingproviders - Increasing employer National Insurance contributions will increase financial pressures on all training providers. This rising running cost will have to be covered without any additional support measures introduced or increased funding rates for Apprenticeships, 16-19 or adult provision. - While significant investment was announced for schools - including capital projects and increasing salaries - no direct comparison was announced for FE. There was an announcement of “£300m for FE” however no details on the purpose of this funding have been shared and indications were that this could be earmarked ‘for colleges’. - National minimum wage for Apprentices will rise by 18% and will be £7.55 per hour from April 2025. While this may increase learner engagement and talent attraction it could also reduce employer engagement due to increased costs. - Foundation Apprenticeships will receive an initial £40m funding which will be underspend that has been reallocated. This is compared to over £2.5bn budget for Apprenticeships via Apprenticeship Levy. This itself will be reviewed by Skills England and is likely to be rebranded as Growth & Skills Levy in the coming years however details of what this may lead to have not been confirmed.

Following our recent full inspection I'm delighted to say Ofsted have graded Springboard Good in all areas. This is fantastic external recognition for all of the hard work and commitment the team continue to show. Our learners often require huge additional support following significant negative experiences during their educational journey, staff go well above and beyond on a daily basis to ensure they get the very best experience available. We'll done #teamspringboard, I couldn't be prouder.

    Research

I wonder if anyone would be interested in joining me, the pullupachair parents - Mags Farquhar, Karen Longstaff, DanceFit with Hayley H, Paul longstaff and Philip Tebbs, Donna Walker, in an unfunded but important project - Project 4,191. 4,191 is the aggregated number of reported suspensions and permanent exclusions in the school year 2022-2023. This project will build upon Project 2,999 (the blanket) representing the children excluded in 2021-2022, funded by the NIHR School for Public Health Research and currently touring England. This is a huge increase in exclusions and we want to celebrate the strengths of these children. The ambition is to create a phoenix with 4,191 feathers created by children and young people who are at risk of or have been excluded from school. We are thinking of fabric feathers ranging from 20cm to 50cm that are two sided. We would like to let the children decide what they write/draw on the feather ideas could be: 1. What they are good at, their strengths (words or pictures) 2. A self portrait or a picture of the person who helps them 3. A drawing or piece of writing sharing their interests 4. Their age and name (could be a made-up name) It would be great if the children could write a short message about how we can support schools to help them thrive. This could be put inside the feather (but accessible) or in an outside pocket. Thanks to partners at Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council for trialling the project. This is an incredibly ambitious project, so please share and support it if you can. Please post any completed feathers to Sarah Martin-Denham, University of Sunderland, St Peters Campus, Wearside View 004, Sunderland, SR6 0AN. All the best, as always Sarah
