Technology for a Low Carbon World

About us

Nova Pangaea Technologies is a cleantech company that has created a patented technology called REFNOVA®. REFNOVA produces 2G ethanol to decarbonise aviation and a natural carbon removal product called biochar. REFNOVA® converts non-food derived agricultural and woody biomass from sustainable sources into bioethanol and biochar. The 2G ethanol can be utilised through the alcohol to jet (ATJ) pathway to enable the production of advanced 2G biofuels such as sustainable aviation fuel. The biochar, a natural carbon removal product, has the ability to deliver an immediate decarbonisation impact.

The UK House of Commons this week approved the draft Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (SAF) Order 2024, which had unopposed support from both sides of the House. It will next go to the House of Lords for approval before becoming law with the airline SAF mandate of 2% coming into effect in January 2025. This year has seen significant progress on the SAF mandate from April's industry consultation response to acknowledgement of a legislative revenue support mechanism in the King’s Speech in July. The latter is intended to support SAF producers as well as draw investment into UK SAF production. Mike Kane, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, who presented the draft RTFO Order, had commented: “SAF is one of the most effective ways of starting to decarbonise flights. The SAF mandate will support the decarbonisation of the aviation industry by creating demand for SAF in the UK.” He also highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting a domestic SAF industry, including through the Advanced Fuels Fund which supports 13 UK plants. Project Speedbird, a partnership between Nova Pangaea Technologies, British Airways and LanzaJet, is one of the UK’s SAF projects. Project Speedbird demonstrates the commercial capability of two complementary technology processes. NPT’s REFNOVA technology will transform 2G non-food derived agricultural and woody biomass taken from sustainable sources into 2G ethanol and biochar. LanzaJet’s AtJ process will convert the 2G ethanol into 102 million litres of SAF per year. The SAF produced at the facility would reduce CO₂ emissions, on a net lifecycle basis, by 230,000 tonnes a year. British Airways intends to offtake the SAF produced at the facility to help power some of its flights.

Led by the United Nations Environment Programme, International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies on 7th of September 2024 signifies thought as well as action to address air pollution and its many effects, primarily on public health as well as the earth’s climate and ecosystems worldwide. Whether it is chemical, physical or biological agents, the end result is the same of modifying the natural characteristics of the atmosphere. UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, says: “Investing in clean air requires actions by both government and businesses to phase out fossil fuels, strengthen air quality monitoring, enforce air quality standards, boost renewable energy, transition to clean cooking, build sustainable transport and sustainable waste management systems, clean up supply chains, and reduce harmful emissions, including methane." As the need to steer away from fossil fuels becomes more and more apparent, including in the aviation industry through government mandates and airline decarbonisation goals, clean technology plays a key role in achieving such targets. Here at Nova Pangaea Technologies we aim to make a significant contribution through our REFNOVA technology and support the industry's decarbonisation pathway. #CleanAir #SAF #NPT #REFNOVA #CleanTech

  • Nova Pangaea Technologies welcomes Jonathan Wood as Chief Commercial Officer. Jonathan has extensive c-suite level experience in renewable fuels and the energy industry. He has a track record of developing and transforming international businesses, acquisitions, and investments in assets and new technologies. Prior to joining Nova Pangaea Technologies as Chief Commercial Officer, Jonathan was Vice President at Neste for the Sustainable Aviation Fuel business, where he led most of the key activities that have enabled it to grow to be the global market leader, including commercial and business development. Jonathan has also held commercial leadership roles at BP, where he was responsible for growing the aviation and road transport fuels businesses. Sarah Ellerby, NPT CEO, said: “I am delighted Jonathan has joined NPT and his appointment is instrumental to the global commercialisation of our REFNOVA technology. His experience will greatly support the next chapter of NPT’s international growth strategy. “We are building an exceptional leadership team to ensure the delivery of our First of a Kind plant in the UK and our flagship Project Speedbird, a partnership with British Airways and LanzaJet. Alongside Jonathan, our leadership team includes high calibre talent covering operations and project delivery." Jonathan Wood said: “I am very pleased to join NPT and it’s impressive leadership team. I have gained much experience in the renewable fuels and aviation sectors and I am looking forward to supporting the company as it progresses and grows through the commercial delivery of the REFNOVA technology, its First of a Kind production investment, and Project Speedbird.” NPT’s REFNOVA technology produces two products, 2G ethanol and biochar, which are of high value to customers seeking to decarbonise and replace the need for fossil-based products. The 2G ethanol can be processed through the alcohol to jet (ATJ) pathway to enable the production of advanced 2G biofuels such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel. The biochar, a natural carbon removal product, can deliver an immediate decarbonisation impact through sequestration and enable a potentially negative CO2 emissions profile. It can also be used for soil improvement and as a filler in cement and asphalt. #NPTLeadership #NPTPeople #CleanTech #REFNOVA
