The voice of the civil nuclear industry in the UK - #NetZeroNeedsNuclear
About us
The Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) is the trade association for the civil nuclear industry in the UK. It represents more than 250 companies across the UK’s nuclear supply chain. The diversity of NIA membership enables effective and constructive industry-wide interaction. NIA member companies have significant expertise in nuclear decommissioning and clean-up, with 18 nuclear sites in the UK currently being managed through the process. We believe nuclear energy is essential to meet the UK’s clean energy needs. Together with renewables and energy efficiency, nuclear can reduce carbon emissions. As part of a diversified energy mix, nuclear-generated energy provides safe and reliable electricity for UK homes, hospitals, schools and industries.

In a world where both energy security and decarbonisation have become a renewed focus from many governments, and the obvious and compelling role for nuclear power is much more widely accepted, then international collaboration to ensure delivery is going to be key to ambitions being achieved in a timely and cost effective way. Over the last year or so I have seen a tendency to try to protect opportunities in constrained domestic markets around the world fall away and, instead, a recognition of the route to success in an expanding market being rooted in co-operation alongside commerical competition. It is also true that governments, regulators and other agencies can learn from each other too as the pace of activity picks up. One of the places ahead of that curve in many ways is Canada, and specifically Ontario. Over recent years the relationship between Canadian Nuclear Association and Nuclear Industry Association has developed, as has the dialogue between our members, and other sector wide bodies. In the last twelve months we have worked together to help deliver the declaration at COP28, begun much needed regulatory co-operation aimed at avoiding duplication, delved into what has made green bonds so successful and discussed the impressive refurbishment projects at Bruce and approaches to new nuclear, both large and small. Last month we had a very productive day with Ontario Energy Minister Stephen Lecce and industry figures when they were in London, and earlier this week we held our first UK/Canada forum in the fantastic setting of Canada House with the Deputy High Commissioner, UK Minister, officials from NRCan and DESNZ, regulators, academia and industry. A programme of work and reports on financing, SMR regulation and fuel supplies undertaken with the active involvement of senior figures from both Canada and UK helped to ensure as governments undertook their bilateral discussions, industry priorities and perspectives were put on the table.

The Nuclear Industry Association and Canadian Nuclear Association were delighted to co-host their inaugural Forum at Canada House 🤝⚛️ The forum highlighted the progress our industries have made in developing recommendations through the CNA-NIA Fuels, SMRs and Regulation, and Green Finance Working Groups over the past year. There were also insightful discussions led by Deputy High Commissioner Robert Fry, Commission of Canada, Rt Hon Lord Philip Hunt, Minister of State at the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero, Dominic Kieran, Chair of the CNA-NIA Fuels Working Group, Jason Dreisbach, Chair of the CNA-NIA SMRs and Regulation Working Group and Patrick Dalzell, CFA, Chair of the CNA-NIA Green Finance Working Group. It was great to see how collaboration and cooperation between the two industries can drive change, and how joint action can lay the foundation for sustainable growth and innovation in the nuclear sector. #nuclearenergy #netzeroneedsnuclear

Listen to our CEO, Corhyn Parr, talk through some of the highlights of our annual review. This has been our second year operating as NWS, and we've made real progress in making nuclear waste permanently safe, sooner: • The safe and secure operation of the UK’s national Low Level Waste Repository (‘the Repository’) in Cumbria, for our workforce, customers, and the local community. There were no major safety incidents in 2023 to 2024, and we received our 18th consecutive Gold Award from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). • Positive progress at pace in delivering a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) as the safe, secure, and long-term solution for the most hazardous radioactive waste. Communities are engaging in the process and site evaluations are underway. • Re-using or recycling waste where possible, diverting 98 per cent of waste from disposal at the Repository. In the past year alone, this has saved nearly £60m – on top of more than £900m saved over the past decade. • Concluded a multi-year project to retrieve, transport, and emplace over a thousand Treated Radwaste Store (TRS) drums, completing this project ahead of schedule. • We’re working with the NDA and the wider nuclear sector to develop innovative ways to treat problematic wastes like asbestos and metals, and to harness new technologies such as thermal treatment. • Recruiting more graduates and apprentices than ever before and supporting initiatives to develop a thriving national workforce of nuclear waste specialists.
