Food and Beverage Manufacturing

Creating a cocoa-free chocolate that is healthier and dramatically less impactful on the environment.

About us

NuKoKo is the new wave of bean-to-bar manufacturing. We have invented a proprietary technology to naturally create a new type of chocolate from ingredients in the UK. It is 100% cocoa-free. Our alt-chocolate is not only delicious but more sustainable and healthier than existing chocolate. Why are you messing with chocolate we hear you say? We are chocolate obsessives and having worked in the industry for the last 15 years have recognised the negative impact the cocoa industry has had on the world and things are just getting worse. 🌲 Massive deforestation to keep up with demand and the effects of climate change 🌍 Chocolate has 5th highest carbon footprint for food 🍫 Huge future chocolate deficit forecast if the world increases in temp by 1.5 degrees. This means there has to be a solution to ensure the future supply of chocolate in a sustainable, affordable and environmentally positive way. Our NuKoKo alt-chocolate harnesses the power of the local beans to recreate our beloved chocolate for the future. Hence why we call ourselves bean-to-bar makers, different beans , same outcome. Our founders Professor David Salt - professor emeritus, 35 years as an active research scientist, 179 research publications and 4 patents and all round cocoa research legend. Ross Newton & Kit Tomlinson - Two food entrepreneurs, who previously owned the incredibly popular confectionery brand, Mighty Fine. And succcesfullly exited in 2021.

This trend is not looking to stop. The demand for sustainability in consumer goods is stronger than ever. 🍫 Despite cost of living concerns, consumers are still willing to spend 9.7% more on average for sustainable production of sourced goods. 🌎 Why? Because 85% of people outline they have felt first-hand the disruptive effects of climate change in their daily lives. For chocolate manufacturers, this means rethinking how products are sourced and produced. Regenerative agriculture, ethical sourcing, and transparency are becoming key purchasing factors as consumers increasingly seek brands that align with their values. —------------------------------------- We’re Nukoko, crafting a delicious, sustainable, cocoa-free chocolate alternative that doesn’t compromise on taste. 🔔 Follow us on LinkedIn ✉️ Sign up for our emails to stay updated on our journey to reimagining chocolate Source: PWC May 2024 Voice of the Consumer Survey

Could the future of chocolate be cocoa-free? 🌍 With cocoa prices surging by +231.56% in the past year, the chocolate industry is feeling the strain. Supply shortages, underinvestment in cocoa farms, climate impact on crop yields and market speculation are driving up costs, forcing brands to raise prices and reduce product quality. But at Nukoko, we’re offering an innovative solution—a cocoa-free alternative made from the sustainable and resilient Fava bean and sourced from the EU. As the cocoa crisis deepens, our ingredient allows chocolate manufacturers to create delicious, high-quality products without the volatility of cocoa prices. —------------------------------------- We’re Nukoko, crafting a delicious, sustainable, cocoa-free chocolate alternative that doesn’t compromise on taste. 🔔 Follow us on LinkedIn ✉️ Sign up for our emails to stay updated on our journey to reimagining chocolate via our page

Love the Fava bean as much as we do? Here a 5 cool facts about the fava bean to start off your week: 1. The fava bean is one of the oldest grown crops in the world. In the Mediterranean, they date back to 6000 BC. 2. The Fava bean is a rich source of dietary fibres, proteins, vitamins B9, B6 and B1 and minerals such as iron, copper and manganese. 3. The beans enrich the soil with nitrogen, which is why they are the basis of natural fertilisers 4.In ancient Rome and Greece there was talk of koukia, the fava bean, when it came to voting: to say "yes" they would vote with a light fava bean , while a darker bean would be used if the vote was "no". The term has remained in use to describe voting. 5. The fava bean is cultivated in around 50 countries around the world today.

The #USPProject #Episode 18: #Chocolates without #Cocoa In recent weeks, #chocolate lovers have witnessed the resurgence of two of the most chilling #words in the history of #commoditymarket headlines: #Cocoa Shortage. Over the past year, cocoa #prices have roughly quadrupled, following poor harvests in #IvoryCoast and #Ghana, the two countries that produce most of the world’s #supply. #Processors have scaled back or shuttered, leaving chocolate-makers without the usual reserves of #cocoabutter and #liquor to produce confections. The cocoa situation looks much more protracted than your usual commodity market cyclicality as we enter the fourth year of poor harvests. #Consumption of chocolate products continues to grow steadily, with the #global #market #forecast to exceed $250 billion this year. While this causing massive #demand #supply gaps, some startups are bucking this whole trend by adding #innovation and making #chocolates without traditional cocoa #beans. One such name is NuKoKo NuKoKo is an #innovative #UK-based startup that has developed the world's #first cocoa-free chocolate using #fava beans. Founded in 2022 by chocolate entrepreneurs Ross Newton and Kit Tomlinson, alongside cocoa research #scientist #Professor David Salt , #Nukoko aims to address the #environmental and #ethical issues associated with traditional chocolate production. The company's chocolate alternative and it #proprietary fermentation #process, in these adverse times, has attracted a lot of investors to their captable including the likes of Oyster Bay Management GmbH , with participation from SOSV, IndieBio and The Mills Fabrica alongside a grant from Innovate UK. NuKoKo has been able to buck the adversity that is caused by fluctuating cocoa prices thanks to the USP it laid out. 🎯 Innovation: NuKoKo uses fava beans instead of cocoa to produce chocolate, addressing the #environmental and #ethical concerns associated with traditional chocolate #production. It also employs a proprietary fermentation process that closely mimics the fermentation of cocoa beans, ensuring that the chocolate produced retains the familiar taste and texture of traditional chocolate 🎯 Ethical Production: Nukoko’s chocolate avoids the #humanrights issues linked to traditional cocoa production, such as #childlabor and #deforestation. This ethical approach appeals to consumers looking for socially responsible products 🎯 Sustainability: The production process of Nukoko’s chocolate produces up to 90% fewer #carbonemissions compared to conventional chocolate, contributing to a significant reduction in the product’s environmental impact, thus aiding #sustainable efforts
