The North Western Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (NWIFCA) was formed in 2011 under Statutory Instrument 2200 (2010) following the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009 (MaCAA). It merged the previous Cumbria Sea Fisheries Committee and North West Sea Fisheries Committee into one district. All Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities share the same vision: “to lead, champion and manage a sustainable marine environment and inshore fisheries by successfully securing the right balance between social, environmental and economic benefits to ensure healthy seas, sustainable fisheries and a viable industry”.

DEFRA have opened the consultation on the conduct and operations of IFCAs. A statutory report by the Secretary of State into the conduct and operation of the ten Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities (IFCA’s) every four years, is prepared and laid before Parliament. 🔹 Your opportunity to contribute to the report The feedback you provide in response to this consultation will contribute to the content of the third quadrennial conduct and operations report. In August 1914, the Royal Navy accepted the offered service of the Sea fisheries patrol vessel the ‘James Fletcher’ with her crew volunteering to sail and serve. The James Fletcher and her crew served for four and a half years, and no casualties were reported to any of her crew. She herself suffered little damage, coming away with only shrapnel marks on the starboard door of the wheelhouse and part of the foremast rigging was once shot away. During her service, she is credited with the sinking of one enemy submarine, which was later found by divers, and it is claimed that she also sank another. The James Fletcher was constantly in the danger zone and was never late for service. On many occasions she took the place of other vessels which were unready for service. The service record for the James Fletcher shows that a tremendous amount of credit was due to the expertise and bravery of the captain and all crew members who volunteered to go with her to active service in September 1914. The James Fletcher and her crew continued to serve the sea fisheries after their safe return up until her sale in 1936. She sailed for nearly thirty years. It would be remiss of us to not mention that it was not only the boat crew who served. From committee documents we now have a 'Role of Honour' for all staff who served during the Great War. Below are the names of those who bravely served their King and Country from 1914-1918. “Roll of Honour 1914-18” E.H. Nicholson T.B. Richardson R. Anderson S. Porter C.E. Wilson R. Westhead S. Croft F.A. Jones W. Dewhurst C. Schofield. J. Leadbetter G. Hanley E. Gregg All the above served with the Royal Naval Reserve. C. Porter. Inniskilling Dragoons. H. Baines. R.A.M.C. W. Riddle. 8th Liverpool Irish. T. Hampson. R.A.M.C. It was recorded in the committee report of 21st March 1917 that T Hampson formally a Scientific Assistant at Liverpool University had died following discharge from the Army. Lest we forget.
