It's been a busy week for our policy team who have been championing our ocean at The Labour Party Conference. A healthy thriving ocean is vital for our coastal communities and climate action. We will be working with Labour to ensure promises on marine conservation and protection become reality. It was great to see so our friends from Greenpeace UK, Marine Conservation Society, Oceana UK, Rewilding Britain, Surfers Against Sewage, Whale and Dolphin Conservation and Zoological Society of London (ZSL) representing nature and the ocean at the conference. 🌍 Rt Hon Steve Reed OBE MP, Barry Gardiner MP, Clare Brook, Aisling McGarrigle, Jasmine Finbow, Adrian Gahan, Jonathan Hughes, Hugo Tagholm, Will McCallum #OceanConservation #LabourPartyConference

We’ve hit 10,000 signatures to #SaveAfricanPenguins, but the fight isn’t over yet! 🐧 There are now more signatures on the petition than breeding pairs of African penguins in the wild. These iconic birds have almost disappeared due to climate change and commercial fishing. Help us reach 15,000 signatures to safeguard the African Penguins future. Every signature counts! Sign the petition using here: https://lnkd.in/eU6_Jegw Thank you for your support!✊

A groundbreaking new paper, written by a team of 30 leading ocean scientists, has set out 11 “Golden Rules” for truly sustainable marine fisheries. These rules seek to redefine sustainable fisheries and minimise their environmental impacts while maximising social benefits. This redefinition is urgently needed, as highlighted by the worrying amount of seafood on our shelves that is marketed as “sustainable” despite being caught using harmful gears that cause lasting harm to fish populations, the marine environment and coastal communities that depend on both for their food security and livelihoods. Setting limits on the size of boats and their fishing gears, ending the flow of harmful subsidies and ruling out gears and fisheries that generate significant collateral damage are three of the paper’s key recommendations. The paper also recognises the need to for greater equity in fisheries management and the need to put an end to fisheries that abuse human rights, health and wellbeing. Ongoing class action lawsuits show that consumers are no longer falling for the lies and deceptive marketing used by retailers and so-called “sustainable seafood” ecolabels to cover up the destructive practices of industrial, distant-water fisheries, all while turning a blind eye to social issues and human rights violations. “The current concept of ‘sustainable fishing,’ adopted by governments and private actors since the post-war period is scientifically obsolete. It relies on a simplistic, productivist theory which assumes that as long as global catch volumes remain below a set limit, anyone can fish just about anything, anywhere, with any method” said lead author Callum Roberts, a professor at the University of Exeter and chief scientist at the Convex Seascape Survey. We look forward to seeing these new Golden Rules being taken on board by retailers and governments alike, and hope that this new sustainability blueprint can lead us away from faux sustainability claims and greenwashing ecolabels, and towards real, equitable change on the water. By 2035, African Penguins could be extinct in the wild. 🐧 In the last century, African Penguins have lost 97% of their population. The penguins’ main food sources, sardines and anchovies, are being depleted by commercial fishing. 🐟 #SaveAfricanPenguins by signing the petition and sharing this post! https://lnkd.in/earwqM4J Only One Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) BirdLife South Africa

🦫 Last month, the Solent Seascape Project team were busy beavers at Hackett’s Marsh in the River Hamble, working to restore the eroding saltmarsh. But how exactly do you save a saltmarsh? ☀️ The team, which included members of staff from Blue Marine Foundation, RSPB and Coastal Partners, along with help from Hampshire County Council Countryside Team, worked through some of the hottest weather of the year to install the biodegradable barriers. 🌿 They are designed to trap sediment, stopping it from further washing away and allowing creeks within the marsh to return to the same level as the surrounding saltmarsh, eventually restoring the threatened habitat. ➡️ Keep following to find out more about the work and visit us at www.solentseascape.com to learn more about the project. #SolentSeascapeProject #Restoration #MarineConservation #Saltmarsh #RiverHamble #Nature #Wildlife #Solent

We’re incredibly proud to announce that the Solent Seascape Project - the first seascape-scale marine restoration project in the UK - has gained international recognition from the United Nations (UN) for its work to protect, connect and restore nature in the Solent for the benefit of all. The project has been endorsed as an official United Nations Decade Action as part of the UN Ocean Decade, for its contribution towards international goals for the protection and restoration of marine biodiversity and for bridging gaps in important areas of ocean science, while also connecting people to the ocean in a sustainable way. As a UN Ocean Decade Action, we’ll be working alongside and learning from a network of other worldwide initiatives to collectively achieve change for our ocean, at a local and global scale, while working to restore salt marshes, seagrass meadows, oyster reefs and seabird sites, which provide benefits for both people and nature across the Solent.
