While the European Union was dealt a blow earlier this year when both Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) and MSCI declined to add the EU to its government bond indices, there is hope that the EU will still achieve sovereign index inclusion sooner rather than later – perhaps as early as 2025. Such a move would have the single biggest impact to the EU’s bonds, making it attractive to global investors and increasing its demand, performance and liquidity. #EU #capitalmarkets #fixedincome #safeasset

Today I had the pleasure of speaking on a panel at OMFIF’s “Europe: the opportunity for global investors” summit in Singapore, co-hosted by the European Commission, where we discussed the market for #EUbonds and how they can be made even more attractive to investors.   The EU can be considered an extraordinary supranational issuer with its large common budget to finance priority projects funded in part by issuing EU debt. EU bonds already qualify as high-quality liquid assets with secondary-market liquidity broadly in line with that of European sovereign government bonds. And the EU will become the world’s largest issuer of green bonds.   One important question is whether the EU will become a long-term issuer.
