Water butts - a cost-effective asset that unlocks collaboration with householders whilst reducing strain on infrastructure. Available in all shapes & sizes (making them perfect to adapt to size, space & style preferences), rainwater capture devices do much more than just store water. 💧 Here’s 5 reasons why we think these humble water capture devices are underrated! 💰 Simple & cost effective - Instead of complex maintenance, costly upgrades or disruptive works, water butts can be retrofitted easily. Providing there is space and a downpipe, these assets can be easily added to a customer's home, with a life span of 10 to 20 years (maybe more!). But what about maintaining the asset? What if the customer just removes the device? 🏡 Opportunity for engagement & education - When it comes to community-based rainwater management projects using rainwater capture devices, the asset is just one part of the equation. Installing a water butt with no engagement misses out on opportunity to improve understanding around our water resources and why these interventions are essential to tackling issues such as sewer spills, surface water flooding and water scarcity. By including customers in the problem, solution and challenges, they’re more likely to maintain the asset, change water consumption behaviours and spread positive sentiment. So, now you have a cost-effective intervention installed on a widespread basis, maintained by the householders - what other benefits can are there? 🏗️ Reduce strain on infrastructure - Slowing the flow can help reduce the volume of water rushing into drainage systems, reducing the chances of system overwhelm leading to CSOs. Equally, water butts or rainplanters provide a store of water for customers, helping reduce demand on mains supplies. How much impact can these assets have? By implementing projects in a smart way, we can provide. . . 📈 Data-collection & validation - Assets provide ample opportunity for data collection, learnings and project validation. Using advanced real-time monitoring combined with a tailored water company dashboard to provide insights of scheme impact, ensuring your interventions have maximum effect whilst validating the project. 🎯 Achieve regulatory targets & policy compliance - Reducing sewer spill, ensuring the quality and supply of water are essential targets that must be achieved, whilst also tackling multi-faceted issues like surface water flooding. SuDS, including water butts, are emphasised in the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 as key in managing surface water run-off. Similarly, the Water Act 2014 focuses upon water efficiency and reducing household demand. Implementing these interventions and managing assets in an innovative, data-informed way is key to exceeding these objectives. There are many more reasons why rainwater capture devices make fantastic interventions and assets. If you to find out more drop us a DM! #OurRainwater #RainwaterManagement #RainwaterCapture

We are back in Eastbourne! 🎉 Read our updated blog post where we talk about two of the schools we have recently worked with in Eastbourne. 📖 We worked with Ocklynge Junior School & Cavendish Education Trust Roselands Juniors over a period of four days, delivering outdoor activities and educational content all related to water and surface water flooding. 🌊 The lessons were delivered by the OurRainwater team as well as support from Blue Heart. 💙 We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and so did the students " It was a really memorable day for them." 😁 We'd like to thank all the staff at both schools for their support and guidance throughout the project, as well as the team from The Blue Heart.🙏   Blue Heart is funded by Defra, as part of the £200 million Flood and Coastal Innovation Programmes, which is managed by the Environment Agency. The programmes will drive innovation in flood and coastal resilience and adaptation to a changing climate.   Read here: https://lnkd.in/dcmjyvWK #susdforschools #eastbourne #ocklynge #Roselands #naturebasedsolutions

It is fantastic to see so many learners engaged with topics of flooding, water sustainability and rainwater management! 🌧️ We enjoy collaborating with Blue Heart and bringing SuDs for Schools to schools throughout Eastbourne as part of the Department for Education's initiative. Thank you to Nick Couzens, Our Rainwater's Education Consultant, who expertly crafted engaging and hand-ons workshops to inspire the future generation of water stewards. 💧 #OurRainwater #SuDSforSchools #DepartmentForEducation #Eastbourne Blue Heart is funded by Defra, as part of the £200 million Flood and Coastal Innovation Programmes, which is managed by the Environment Agency. SEPTEMBER NEWS : SUDS FOR SCHOOLS PROJECT - BLUE HEART Recently, our #SUDs team began their exciting new project - #SUDsForSchoolsProject. A whopping 63 of our #TeamOcklynge learners from Years 4 and 5 participated in engagement and design workshops run by Blue Heart SuDs for Schools. The children learned about the causes and dangers of flooding and how they can capture rainfall in our school. Together they experimented with guttering and Archimedes' screws to move water, they discovered which surfaces were most absorbent and built watertight dens, floating islands and dams. What fun they had outdoors whilst learning! After a morning of activities and learning, they moved into the design phase. The children were set the task of designing exciting water capture systems to slow the flow of water around the school. The SuDs for Schools team will now study the children's designs and bring their ideas to life in our school, how brilliant is that! A huge thank you to the SuDs for Schools team for providing the children with such a memorable experience and the chance to have their ideas used to solve real life problems. The children met Andy the engineer, who is a former Ocklynge learner #Alumni, and is now one of the people responsible for bringing their designs to life. We hope the experience has inspired some of the group to follow in his footsteps. A huge thank you to Andy and his team for visiting, we loved welcoming you back to #TeamOcklynge. Andy said:- 'I cannot commend the school highly enough for the way the children engaged in the activities with enthusiasm and interest. They managed the excitement of the day incredibly well and their behaviour was fantastic. They demonstrated some wonderful ‘Star Behaviour’. The atmosphere of Ocklynge Junior School is brilliant. Children are excited to be there but they are able to manage this and the school feels calm and incredibly well managed by the staff. Play times worked incredibly well despite the huge number of children. They are given space to run and play, allowed to engage in activities that interest and excite them and are given the opportunity to be children. I was particularly impressed with the Forest School, clearly a lot of work has gone into that area and the children have got a lot from it, expanding their skills and experiences beyond the four walls of a classroom. A huge thank you to Mrs Swingler for making us feel so welcome and supporting us throughout our visit and a massive thank you and well done to the children of years 4 and 5 who took part in the sessions. Legends, one and all!'. Still not sure what SuDS are, and how the project is supporting our community? In honour of Unblocktober this month here's an interesting statistic about Fats, Oils & Grease (FOG's). 🥘 Fats, Oils and Grease ending up down our drains can accumulate over time and cause blockages in our wastewater system. These specific blockages aren't rare, with thousands of cases a year, costing nearly £200 million a year to fix. 💸 It can be easy to forget when washing up and pour fats and oils down the sink. The best thing to do is let them cool so they solidify and then scrap them into the food compost. ❄️ #OurRainwater #SlowTheFlow #Unblocktober #Unblocktober2024 #WaterManagement
