UPM - The Biofore Company Survey Reveals Cost Hurdles in Sustainable Packaging Adoption A recent survey by UPM indicates that cost is the primary barrier to adopting sustainable packaging solutions. The survey highlights that while there is significant interest in eco-friendly packaging, the higher costs associated with sustainable materials deter many businesses. UPM emphasizes the need for industry collaboration to address these financial challenges and drive wider adoption of sustainable practices. The findings suggest that cost-effective innovations and incentives could play a crucial role in overcoming these barriers and advancing sustainable packaging. IN THE PRESS 🗞️ Our campaign to reform the Plastic Packaging Tax has been making headlines across the logistics industry. We believe the current structure of the PPT unfairly targets businesses like ours, who supply many industry leading companies with durable, reusable plastic products – reducing deforestation in the process. We argue that the tax should focus solely on single-use plastics to truly promote environmental responsibility. A big thanks to Packaging News for covering our story. Aerosol recycling will witness a boost with a new collaboration The objective behind this strategic partnership between SUEZ and Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation Ltd (Alupro) is to elevate the recycling rates of Aerosol. This dynamism shows an effort from the metal packaging industry to lay a better foundation for higher recycling rates in the future. The research was conducted by Alupro which clearly stated that society is unaware of how to dispose of aerosols, due to which fewer aerosols are being disposed, of compared to most other forms of metal packaging. Having been a group of lithographic packaging printers for 25 years, we have experienced the hardship of attracting young talent to our company first-hand. Therefore, the recent article by Packaging News titled 'UK packaging industry faces workforce 'time bomb' (link in the comments) hit close to home. We decided to share it with our thoughts to spread awareness about the importance of our industry and the dire state of education and recruitment within it. We need to be heard. We need a change in the UK; we can't just rely on overseas packaging, which is cheaper and bought in bulk. We have a national treasure: our own high-quality packaging industry, local and sustainable, with a known supply chain. For many businesses that pride themselves on sustainability, British-printed cartons are the best option. The UK packaging industry is world-leading in many aspects, but what happens five or ten years down the line when we don’t have the workforce to sustain it, particularly in specialised technical skills? We fall behind. As argued in the article, the root of this issue lies in education. It’s the cornerstone of progress in our industry, yet our options have been limited. Unlike the US and Germany, where established programs equip the next generation of packaging professionals with essential skills, the UK has lagged behind. We only have one program like this — Sheffield Hallam’s Higher Degree Apprenticeship Packaging Professional BSc course. There’s nothing else available like it in the UK. So if you're a young person considering your career options, please look into packaging — a prospering sector that cannot exist without you. If you're a packaging buyer, please consider sourcing your packaging from suppliers like us — local and sustainable. And if you are a fellow packaging company — let's fight for the change together. #Recruitment #PrintingIndustry #Talent #FutureofPackaging #Change
