Pallas Resources, together with Satpayev University, was excited to host Dr. Steve Garwin on July 25th for a series of talks on porphyry-epithermal systems, targeting, and discovery. The event drew a great crowd of over 40 attendees who were deeply engaged throughout. So Pallasite is a thing (I probably should have known that tbh). The Pallasites are a type of rare meteorite that have large olivine crystal inclusions in a ferro-nickel matrix. The name comes from Peter Simon Pallas, a Prussian scientist and explorer who first described one found near Krasnoyarsk Russia in 1778. P. S. Pallas also explored Kazakhstan where he named several animal species, from which Pallas Resources got its name. The Fukang pallasite (pictured) contains large, gem quality olivine, or peridot, in a nickel-iron matrix. It was found in Fukang, Xinjiang China in 2000 (coincidentally quite near where I worked from 2006-2009), and has been dated at 4.5 billion years old. Pallasites were thought to be from the core-mantle boundary of differentiated asteroids that were shattered by impacts. A more recent idea is that they are impact-generated mixtures of core and mantle materials. Thanks to Royal Ontario Museum for the chance to tour their collection and bhp Xplore for arranging!
