Our head of specialist training Stephen Willett recently made great use of his 9-day fortnight by donning his medal ribbon to run the British Legion Poppy Appeal stand in his local supermarket. “It was my first time actually manning the stand this year and I was humbled by the generosity shown by everyone old and young, from all walks of life. It brought back long-ago memories of my time in the armed forces, talking to people about the poppy appeal and explaining the colours on my medal ribbon. It’s time to meet more of the PartB team. This week it’s Steve Beckwith, senior fire consultant. Why did you decide to join PartB? Since retirement from the fire service in 2016 (after nearly 32 years’ service), I continued to work within the fire safety and health and safety sectors. Following a more recent period of self-employment, I decided it wasn’t for me. I was aware of PartB and had followed their rise within the fire industry since 2020. I knew Jamie through our days together in Kent Fire & Rescue Service and decided to approach him in March 2023. The best decision I made. Can you tell us a little about your role and what it involves? I’m a Senior Fire Consultant based in Kent and I work within one of the fire engineering teams. Since retirement and predominantly completing fire risk assessments, health and safety assessments and delivering training, I was keen to learn something different. Being part of the FE team allows me to develop and learn more about the nature, characteristics and mechanisms of fire. During my career, I just knew how to put them out! Fire Risk Appraisals of External Walls (FRAEWs) focus on a review of the external walls and cladding of multi-storey and multi-occupancy residential and commercial buildings. Part of the process before the FRAEW is completed by us; we collate information about the building to supplement information sent from the client. i.e. fire service access, size of the building, firefighting facilities, smoke ventilation systems, etc. To capture this information, PartB carries out a ‘Firefighting Facilities & Building Configuration Assessment’. I’ve been completing these in London and the South East, and sometimes further afield. I’ve also been assisting the FRM team to quality check fire risk assessments and offer advice to colleagues based on my operational knowledge. Finally, I’ve been asked to assist Steve Glass (Associate, Construction Fire Safety) in carrying out construction site fire and emergency plan visits. What's the best part about working for PartB? Working for an organisation who value all their staff members and provide support and development opportunities. It’s nice to be part of a team again. Can you tell us something interesting about yourself? (fun fact, etc) In 1985, whilst training to become a firefighter at London Fire Brigade training centre in Southwark, I was chosen as the recruit to hand the bottle of champagne to Liz Hobbs (Water Ski champion at the time) for her to launch the new London Fire Brigade boat, ‘London Phoenix’. It’s time to meet another member of our team. This time it’s finance assistant, Karen Weatherston… Why did you decide to join PartB?   Before applying for my role at PartB, I researched the company thoroughly using their website. I was extremely impressed by the way the company came across and I loved the meet the team feature and being able to see pictures of the teams. I felt this was a really nice touch and a really nice insight to the company. I have always wanted to work alongside a company where I would be able to grow and develop and I felt that PartB would be an employer to encourage self-development alongside company goals. I could see they had come on leaps and bounds within the few years they had been operating, and knew there would be lots of opportunities for progression as the company grew bigger. After looking further into what PartB offer staff in terms of flexible working, the extra benefits provided, and the company culture, I knew this was the type of company I wanted to be a part of. Can you tell us a little about your role and what it involves?  I have been in my role as a finance assistant for over a year now and I thoroughly enjoy it. I have learnt so much in the past year, and my role continues to develop, which keeps me on my toes and keeps things interesting. A typical day in my role would include billing clients for completed work, processing supplier invoices and seeking approval from the relevant purchaser, dealing with client queries, allocating all incomings and outgoings from our bank, ensuring these are allocated correctly, bank reconciliations, reviewing and processing staff expenses….. and much, much more :) What's the best part about working for PartB? Knowing you are appreciated and trusted to do your job. I have worked for many different companies where I have worked incredibly hard, received no appreciation, and have felt micro-managed, despite hitting targets and deadlines I was given, and it is the most demotivating thing in the world. PartB is the complete opposite to the above. They always make a consistent effort to shout staff out for achievements, and when they say flexible working they truly mean it. I have never been made to feel bad/unable to go my son’s school assembly or go to a dentist appointment. Having the flexibility to juggle mum life and work life without feeling guilty you're letting either side down is a relief and something I am very grateful for. Can you tell us something interesting about yourself?   I learnt how to play the piano when I was 10 years old, and the first song I learnt to play was The Entertainer by Scott Joplin (the tune from the old Felix the cat adverts) – I still know it off by heart to this day! #partb #partbfireengineering #fireengineering #meettheteam #team #people #ourteam #teamwork #meetourstaff
