"The UK government's move to update existing planning rules around nuclear development to enable more plants to be built will, for the first time, acknowledge the critical importance of small modular reactors (SMRs) to the UK energy infrastructure and high-power demand sectors such as data centres," says Hydrock, now Stantec's Divisional Director for Nuclear Peter Sibley. He adds: "To ensure that rapid deployment timeframes can be achieved, it is also important that clarification is sought on siting criteria and key regulatory approval processes for SMRs. "This represents an exciting development for the nuclear sector and its links to supporting improved energy security, decarbonisation and long-term socio-economic prosperity." Hydrock, now Stantec reposted this
Achieving universal local plan coverage is a major objective for UK government and a key part of its planning reforms to deliver growth. But how do we get there, and what are the potential challenges? Last week, Stantec brought together leading voices from industry, as well as figures from local and central government to discuss the future of plan making – and the actions needed to accelerate their preparation. From strong political leadership and earlier engagement with statutory consultees, to well-resourced departments and stronger commitments to meet Local Development Schemes – here are some quick takeaways from Anna Rose of the Planning Advisory Service (PAS) and Michael Knott, town planning director at Stantec.

Picture a nuclear power plant. You may be thinking of large concrete buildings, or a dome structure on a huge industrial site, with hundreds of workers - and perhaps even several thousand inanimate fuel assemblies. But Small Modular Reactors, known as SMRs, are completely changing what nuclear power can look like - and are proving an enticing option for sites that need a steady supply of power quickly, such as data centres. "SMRs are emerging globally as a transformative solution for powering data centres. Unlike traditional large-scale nuclear plants, SMRs are smaller, cheaper and faster to deploy, making them highly attractive for both investors and operators," shares our nuclear divisional director Peter Sibley, in a session with Institutional Investing in Infrastructure (i3). To read the full Q&A, which delves into how small-scale nuclear could be the solution the data centre sector is looking for, click here: https://lnkd.in/ezmBW6uH #Nuclear #SMR #DataCentres

A landmark build-to-rent scheme in a sought-after neighbourhood, One Silk Street is a luxury co-living development in the Ancoats area of Manchester. Completed in 2022, It was named Development of the Year (fewer than 100 homes) at the Insider North West Residential Property awards in 2023. We joined forces with architects Falconer Chester Hall and developers Northern Group to bring this attention-grabbing scheme to life. Here's how we helped unlock this site, once home to a 1950s electrical works: 📌 Developed on underused brownfield land, One Silk Street sits on a land-locked site. Following industry best-practice, our land quality specialists provided a Materials Management Plan (MMP) to comply with waste regulation, enabling sustainable re-use of materials. 🏗️ Our civil and structural specialists provided detailed design to enable construction, even overcoming the challenges of the Victorian drainage systems still used in the area. 🏢 Our MEP team was appointed through RIBA stages 4–6 to consider the multiple facets that feed into or influence the building's design and performance. 🔊 Our acoustic engineers developed bespoke solutions that optimised the building’s acoustics, whilst protecting the architectural intent to leave historic elements exposed. 📈 Our specialist fire consultants performed computational fluid dynamic (CFD) and evacuation modelling to determine safety margins, resulting in an increase in lettable space, whilst maintaining a safe design.
