In our latest Thought Leaders episode, we're joined by Kirk Wojno, MD, and Jim Lu, MD PhD, Founder of DigitCells and GoPath Diagnostics. This episode tackles the transition from traditional to digital pathology, the pain points in molecular sendouts, and how the TWOD system reduces inefficiencies while enhancing diagnostic accuracy. From reducing mouse clicks to optimizing tissue workflow. This new Tissue Workflow Optimization for Digital (TWOD) system is designed to streamline lab operations and improve accuracy in digital pathology. By reducing the number of cassettes, slides, and digital images needed for prostate biopsies, TWOD enhances efficiency, minimizes errors, and keeps tissue orientation intact, allowing pathologists to diagnose with more confidence. The integration of barcode tracking from collection to analysis ensures no sample mix-ups, leading to better patient safety. PathAI, a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital pathology solutions, has announced a partnership with the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation. The collaboration will empower academic and biopharmaceutical researchers to unlock insights into inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) through the unique combination of quantitative histopathology data and well-characterized multi-modal clinical and molecular data. “We are thrilled to collaborate with the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, the leading nonprofit organization in the IBD space, as a preferred partner to meaningfully advance our understanding of IBD through this unique combination of datasets,” said Andrew Beck, MD, PhD, co-founder and CEO of PathAI. Quantitative histopathology data will be derived from the deployment of PathAI’s IBD Explore™ and AIM-HI UC™ algorithm products1 on digitized histology images from the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation’s IBD PlexusⓇ dataset. The parties will also pursue collaborative research using their complementary assets aimed at advancing the field of IBD research. “By partnering with PathAI, we aim to uncover valuable insights from well-characterized pathology images, enhancing our understanding of IBD at the microscopic level and paving the way for novel biomarkers, refined disease subtypes, and potential therapeutic targets,” said Angela Dobes, SVP IBD Plexus, Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation. Pathology News's new headline article highlights a groundbreaking study from researchers at GCS INSTITUT UNIVERSITAIRE DU CANCER ONCOPOLE-and Université Paul Sabatier Toulouse III, who developed two innovative methods to reduce stain color bias in histopathology images used for AI training. Their approaches, AugmentHE for stain color augmentation and HEnorm for image normalization, address the inconsistencies in staining techniques across laboratories, enhancing AI model performance. Tested on breast cancer images from three clinical trials, these methods reduced bias and improved model accuracy by up to 21.7%. The combination of normalization and augmentation proved the most effective strategy for overcoming stain variability. These open-source tools offer critical advancements for digital pathology and AI applications in healthcare.
