Today the Patient Safety Commissioner for England Henrietta Hughes has published a set of Patient Safety Principles. These intended to act as a guide for leaders on how to design and deliver safer care for patients and reduce avoidable harm, in a just and learning culture. We welcome these new principles. In this blog we set out our reflections on these, including key points from our response as part of the public consultation process earlier this year. How these are used in practice will ultimately determine their success. If these principles are to be realised, they will need not just to be accompanied by an endorsement from the Department of Health and Social Care and the NHS, but also clear action. This week we have been at the Connected Health and Care Summit 2024 in Manchester. Hosted by RLDatix, this event brings together a community of health and care professionals in service planning, clinical operations, workforce operations, and safety from across Europe. We have been meeting with people at our exhibition stand throughout this event, discussing the need for a transformation in our approach to patient safety, making this a core purpose of health and care. Our Chief Executive Helen Hughes also held a session yesterday focused on introducing and implementing new electronic patient record systems safely. This reflected on the findings of our report published earlier this year, ‘Electronic patient record systems: Putting patient safety at the heart of implementation’ (Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e5Teb4fH). #pslhub #patientsafety #workforceplanning #clinicaloperations #workforceoperations #electronicpatientrecords Liz Jones Alex Bristow

On Friday 27 September 2024 we held our first Patient Safety Symposium, organised with the Patient Safety Management Network and Patient Safety Education Network. This was focused on the practical application of two Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF) tools and methods: Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety (SEIPS) and AcciMaps. Helping to bring this event to life, the medical technology company BD kindly hosted this at their Safety and Innovation Hub in Winnersh, enabling us to hold the symposium for free, with members of both networks invited to attend.
