As the Labour government reiterates its pledge to construct 1.5 million new homes over the next five years, the role of digital materials procurement becomes crucial in expediting housebuilding throughout the UK. 🏚 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐧𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐭 ✂ A significant advantage of using digital systems for procurement is their ability to enhance cost efficiency and improve budget management in construction projects. By leveraging real-time price benchmarking tools, contractors can compare quotes from multiple suppliers side-by-side. This pricing transparency helps identify the best deals and ensures that materials are procured at the lowest possible cost without compromising on quality. Digital procurement also provides the ability to track and analyse procurement data to aid in forecasting and financial planning. With detailed records of past purchases, companies can make more informed decisions and negotiate better terms for future projects. As the UK grapples with an ongoing housing crisis, Labour’s proposed mandatory housing targets offer a promising step toward alleviating the shortage of homes in England. However, a critical sector—student housing—has largely been overlooked in these plans, raising questions about whether the full range of potential solutions is being considered. ⬇ #StudentAcommodation

By 2050, the global urbanization rate is expected to reach 68%, with two-thirds of the population living in cities or other urban areas, making the need for nature-positive construction more pressing than ever. 🌱 Akanksha Khatri, head of nature and biodiversity at the World Economic Forum, shares insight into new guidance that outlines five priority actions for the cement and concrete industry to revamp their business practices and contribute to a "nature-positive" economy. 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞-𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 ⤵ 1: Improve water stewardship across the value chain. 2: Adopt technologies and manufacturing practices to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) and airborne emissions. 3: Continue and strengthen reclamation and rehabilitation approaches as well as biodiversity management of quarries and improve land stewardship on all occupied land. 4: Expand circularity efforts across the value chain. 5: Innovate to offer products that support the transition to nature-positive. The guidance suggests that these priority actions could unlock $44 billion in annual business opportunities by 2030. 📈 🔗 Guidance breakdown by Akanksha Khatri here: https://bit.ly/46QuTxV #Concrete #Cement #Biodiversity #Construction #CircularEconomy

Barratt Homes-Redrow £2.5bn merger to complete this week 🤝 Barratt has declared its plan to finalize the £2.5 billion merger with Redrow, foregoing a condition set by the Competition & Markets Authority (CMA). In a recent statement to the London Stock Exchange, Barratt revealed that it had dismissed the requirement for CMA approval to proceed with the merger. The firm will engage with the CMA to address ongoing issues regarding competition in Whitchurch, Shropshire, where the significant concentration of Barratt and Redrow developments within an 11-mile radius has sparked worries about potential higher costs or reduced quality for homebuyers. 𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 ⚠ Issues around everyday sexism remain prevalent in engineering, and with the proportion of women working within the industry decreasing in the past year, it’s clear that while progress has been made, there is still a long way to go. Being mistaken for other non-technical job roles, catcalling on worksites or being told “you don’t look like an engineer” are sadly a few examples of the assumed stereotypes and misogyny being faced by female engineers. In an exclusive piece, three women engineers from Harley Haddow share insights about misconceptions and perspectives about being a woman in engineering ➡ https://bit.ly/4djPPzD #WomenInEngineering #Engineering #FemaleEngineers
