We have joined forces with PBS UK to develop five videos to support the understanding and implementation of PBS. Patrick Behan and Jo Coulson BCBA UKBA(cert) present on various different topics within PBS, such as, understanding capable environments and how social workers can assess if PBS is really happening within services. A special thanks to Hannah Johnson for all her support and patience in making these. The first topic will cover how to complete Antecedent, Behaviour, Consequence (ABC) forms and will be released on 29th October. #PBS #Resources #Collaboration #NorfolkCountyCouncil

But that’s just rewarding his behaviour!! Sometimes a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing… and this is a big problem in PBS. We want our teams to understand that behaviour serves a purpose, and that it’s influenced by what happens before and after, but time constraints mean we often have to limit our teachings to ‘the basics’. Most people know that reinforcement is a thing, but maybe don’t understand the nuance. It can be hard to tell where the line is between being nice to a person who is struggling (maybe offering them a cup of tea, or some 1:1 time) and ‘accidental reinforcement’! We can’t do that… that’s ‘reinforcing his behaviour!’ I really sympathise with this problem - when I reflect on my early understanding of behaviour analysis, it all felt so straightforward. The reality is not - humans are a complex, diverse, changing (and wonderful) species. Here is a rule of thumb - if the problem behaviour is this persons best (or easiest) way of accessing the ‘reinforcer’ then we might need to be careful, but if I can make my own cup of tea, we don’t need to worry that giving me one to support me to calm down will accidentally reinforce my behaviour! If I get loads of time with my favourite people anyway… a bit extra to help reassure me probably isn’t a problem. It’s absolutely okay to treat people how you might like to be treated in their shoes. #justkindness- #notreinforcement #pbs #pbsuk #pbsgoodpractice #ineedmytea

We are so proud of our Associate Director, Hannah Newcombe, who will be leaping out of her comfort zone and presenting some of our recent work at the APBS 2025 conference. Hannah was our first ever employee and we didn’t just strike gold, she is an absolute diamond. She has grown so much and there is no one more equipped to do this. We can’t wait to listen and support her in St. Louis, Missouri next year. #pbs #pbsuk #positivebehavioursupport #conference #presentation #apbs

We are pleased to announce that early access booking is now available for the 2025 PBS Good Practice Conference on the topic of Learning From Our Mistakes; Professional Humility in PBS. We have an amazing keynote speaker and a whole variety of fantastic talks/discussion sessions that will definitely give you food for thought. People booking before the end of October will be given a whole weeks advance access to booking for the individual sessions meaning that they are much more likely to get a spot in the talks they most want! https://lnkd.in/ezNhP9Wb FAQs! 1. Will there be CEUS? YES absolutely there will be - we are selling a 'CEUs Included Ticket' which entitles you to claim as many CEUs as you like both on the day and for a period of 1 calendar month after the event, by logging in and watching the recordings after the fact (asynchronously). There should be a minimum of 10 CEUs available between both. 2. Why is it not free this year? We are so lucky that our conference has expanded enormously since we first started and, frankly, it costs us a bunch to run! Whilst we're happy to give up our time, we also have to purchase additional zoom licences every year as well as get support with the CEU platform. We're not aiming to make a profit so we've kept the price as low as we possibly can, rather than turn people away. If the £10 attendance fee is difficult for you in anyway please email us and we will arrange a free ticket. 3. Will recordings be available after the event? Most likely- yes, although this is down to the individual choice of the presenter - sometimes people prefer not to be recorded. CEUS will be available asynchronously where possible. #PBSUK #PBSGoodPractice #PBSGP2025 #ProfessionalHumility #CEUs #CPD

I cannot believe how many people have submitted potential talks for the PBS Good Practice 2025 Online Conference. It's going to be amazing. As a reminder, our title is Learning From Our Mistakes: Professional Humility in PBS. Our Keynote speaker is the fantastic Richard Hastings and we have so many people willing to share their experiences about mistakes we've made as a field (either individually or globally) and how to overcome these. If you would like to be considered as a speaker, please email cmartin@pbsuk.org with your proposed title and a short abstract. We'll stop taking applications on the 31st of October! #PBSGoodPractice #OnlineConference #CPD2025 #ProfessionalHumility #PBSGP2025 #PBSUK

We love it when our team members volunteer and share their experiences with us. Kate, who joined the PBSuk team last year, took part in a five day residential this summer with AFASIC taking a group of over 13s to an outdoor activity centre in Kent. They mainly support those with speech and language disorders however there are also participants with autism, ADHD and other associated conditions. Many participants have been coming along for years. There are activities like swimming, kayaking, rock climbing and dry slope skiing. Not forgetting making delicious ‘smores too! It is a great opportunity to socialise in a safe environment, gain independence skills, staying away from home (the first time for some) and mainly having fun together. #pbsuk #positivebehavioursupport #volunteering #outdooractivities Photo permissions have been obtained.

What do you need from a PBS Practitioner? Last month we met with our very good friend and colleague Jo Coulson BCBA UKBA(cert) from Supporting Positively about some work we are doing together and we were chatting about how many conversations we’ve had recently with small providers or individual commissioners who are seeking support with PBS but aren’t totally sure what they should be looking for. We answered some of the most frequent questions here! If you’re thinking about providing complex services or hiring/commissioning someone to support with PBS we hope this helps. Please note - it is NOT currently a legal requirement that PBS practitioners register with the UKSBA - so don’t panic if that isn’t in place - but if you don’t feel confident that you would recognise good practice then knowing they are registered with the PSA appointed regulator should provide some reassurance that they are signed up to the ethical codes and have the necessary qualifications/CPD. Also this video is pitched for services in social care settings! If you’re not from that group you might need to tweak it slightly :) #pbsuk #supportingpositively #practitionerstandards #pbsquality #pbsethics
