Every 90 minutes, a life is lost to suicide in the UK and Ireland, emphasising the urgent need for societal awareness and action. Autistic individuals are 7 times more likely to die by suicide in comparison with the general population. This highlights the stark need to understand the specific challenges faced by each and every individual in order to provide person-centred and efficient support to those in need. Positive Support Group's Autumn Newsletter delves into the critical topic of suicide prevention. Through a range of articles, we explore how this critical issue can be addressed through openminded conversations, education, innovative and interdisciplinary approaches, and most of all, listening to those who are affected. It's time to dispel the stigma surrounding mental health and foster open, compassionate dialogues throughout society. By talking about suicide we can take meaningful steps towards breaking the stigma and cultivate a society where those who are struggling find hope and reasons to live. If you want to know more about the support available for individuals with suicide related behaviours, please read our interview with Jessica Aviles, Chief Clinical Officer at PSG, about the development of PSG’s Suicide Prevention Model, suicide in the autistic population, and the future of suicide prevention: https://lnkd.in/eTD3MHmd Want to receive more of our newsletters? 🏫 School exclusions, including suspensions and unauthorised absences, are on the rise in 2023/24. According to a recent report by The Public Institute for Policy and Research children with special educational needs (SEN) are disproportionally affected and are now up to five times more likely to be excluded than their peers. 👥 Missing out on education risks leading to a cascade of detrimental effects on learning, quality of life and future opportunities. The reasons for the increase in exclusions relate to a range of societal and socio-economic factors. There is a stark need for us as a society to work together on innovative, multi-faceted and trans-disciplinary ways of solving this issue. 👀 Watch our video to explore how we at Positive Support Group can do our part in tackling exclusion and promote wellbeing at school through our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support service. 📧 You can also visit positivesupportgroup.com or email referals@positvesupportgroup.com to learn more about our S-W PBS and Return to Education services. ❓ How can we make a difference together and find collaborative and holistic ways to support each student to flourish? Indications of an increase in children with special educational needs (SEN) in mainstream schools not receiving adequate support are concerning. Through our Return to Education service, Positive Support Group has firsthand experience of the impact of school breakdown and exclusion on these students. Missing out on education can lead to significant distress for children, young people, and their families. Absence from the school environment may trigger a cascade of negative outcomes such as social isolation, reduced confidence and wellbeing, and missed opportunities for social and academic growth. Early person-centred and holistic support is crucial for those struggling at school. As a society, we need to prioritise this issue and collaborate on innovative and holistic approaches. All children deserve a good education. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eMR_i3Dg ❓What are YOUR thoughts on this topic? Great initiative by Jersey charity Baresford Street Kitchen and a local hospital catering department who are successfully supporting people with intellectual disabilities to gain skills and experience! https://lnkd.in/gbMt9_gw Only 5.9% of people with intellectual disabilities in the UK have paid employment, despite their desire and capability to work (Weld-Blundell et al., 2021). According to The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Article 27 – Work and Employment, disabled people have the right to earn a living by freely choosing their employment, to have reasonable adjustments made, and access to opportunities for training, further development and promotion. It is crucial for social service providers to offer customized support to help individuals with intellectual disabilities secure suitable employment that aligns with their unique needs and preferences. ❓ How does YOUR organisation support people with intellectual disability to find paid employment, and what are your general thoughts on the topic?
