  • Phase 1 of the Mill Lane site won two awards at last night's Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry (CFCI) Awards: Best Refurbishment over £3 million and Craftsmanship. The scheme also received a Highly Commended in the David Mackay Award for Engineering and Sustainability category, as did Cocksedge Building Contractors Limited in the Contractors Award category. We are delighted that the hard work and skills of Beatie Blakemore, Hannah Constantine, Haworth Tompkins, Bidwells, Gleeds, Price & Myers, Max Fordham LLP, Joel Gustafsson, Tom Stuart-Smith Studio, Charcoalblue, WSP in the UK, Turley, Kellenberger–White, Alison Turnbull and Cocksedge on this monumental project have been recognised with these well-deserved awards. To quote the judges' citations: 'The project needed to apply a vast range of craft skills due to its size, complexity and multi-faceted nature. The Mill Lane complex presented huge challenges, and we were awed and impressed by the quality, detailing, diversity and beauty of what has been created. We particularly commend the recycling of materials, including timber and brick; the careful sourcing of new timber; the fact that where possible, historic features have been left to add character and personality; and the clever integration of new features, such as the forged grille at the street entrance.' (Craftsmanship Award) 'Re-using the historic but muddled Mill Lane site, the project has found new uses for old buildings, created new gardens drawing on the character of those on the College’s main site, and created a stunning new performance/ teaching/gathering space in the repurposing of Emmanuel Church and the former School House, now a stunningly beautiful foyer. We very much like the new entry from the street, which is a public thoroughfare, and the careful, understated connection made to the main college entrance over the road.' • Pembroke House Spring Lecture 📆 5.30 pm, Friday 14th March 📍 Auditorium, Pembroke College In 1885 a group of Pembroke undergraduates went to Walworth in SE London to live, work and solve problems alongside local communities, laying the foundation for what became Pembroke House. 140 years later, Pembroke House remains a space for people to come together, shaped by shifting social challenges and the efforts of those who have passed through it. Join us for an evening exploring Pembroke House’s history and transformation, with a lecture by Dr. Mattias Koli, whose PhD research and personal experience as a residential volunteer offer a unique perspective on how organisations like Pembroke House evolve, adapt, and continue their work in changing times. The lecture, delivered by Dr. Mattias Koli, will delve into the ideas that shaped Pembroke House’s beginnings, its role in Walworth today, and the difficult but necessary questions being asked about its future. What does it mean to build relationships in a neighbourhood marked by inequality and increasing gentrification? How does an organisation remain relevant in an era of rapid social change? And what lessons can Pembroke House offer for those working in community life today? It will be followed by a panel discussion featuring voices from Pembroke House today, offering a chance to ask questions and engage in a discussion about the challenges and opportunities of working in a neighbourhood like Walworth. Book your place via the link in the comments.

  • Anna Lapwood MBE will be stepping down as the Janeway Director of Music at Pembroke at the end of the academic year to concentrate on her career as a concert organist. Through her nine years at Pembroke, Anna has done an immeasurable amount to lead and develop and support music as a fundamental part of College life, particularly choral and organ music. Her achievements include: - Strengthening the reputation of the College Choir, which now regularly appears on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM - Founding the Pembroke College Girls’ Choir in 2018 - Nurturing 7 organ scholars - Leading annual music outreach trips to Zambia, taking the College Choir there twice - Commissioning and championing work by female composers - Working with members of both choirs to develop their own compositions - Organising 24-hour charity Bach-a-thons with contributors from across the world - Recording three albums & 2 EPs with the choirs – All Things are Quite Silent, Celestial Dawn, A Pembroke Christmas, The Waiting Sky & In the Stillness - Bringing Grammy-winning composer and conductor Eric Whitacre to Pembroke to work with the Choirs and run events with the general public Throughout her time with the College, Anna has been a tireless advocate for the organ and a role model for organists. She has had a particular impact on encouraging more women and girls to play this wonderful instrument through her ‘Play Like a Girl’ initiative and the annual Cambridge Organ Experience for Girls. She has worked to broaden the organ’s appeal and demonstrate its versatility as an instrument through her social media presence, and now has over 2 million followers worldwide. During the lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic, when choirs could not sing together, as well as running choral practices online with both College choirs, she created and conducted the NHS Chorus-19, a virtual choir made up of over 1,000 NHS staff from across the UK. While we will be saddened to lose Anna, we are excited to see what she does next and will follow her career with interest. Photo: Charlotte Levy
