The significance of Black hair goes far beyond aesthetics—it's deeply tied to identity, culture, and personal empowerment. To celebrate Black History Month, our Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Alexis Curtis-Harris led an important discussion on heritage and self-acceptance, sharing insights into her own hair journey. Let’s keep having these vital conversations and pushing for change, so that everyone can express themselves authentically in all spaces. 👏🏾 #Inspiring #BlackHairIsProfessional

Black Hair is More Than Just Hair Today, I had the privilege of leading a powerful session with DS Smith , diving deep into a subject that’s not just personal to me- it’s been a core part of my journey since childhood: Black hair and the ongoing fight against hair discrimination. As you’ll see in the picture I’m sharing, this is little Alexis, with her natural hair. Back then, she didn’t know that her hair carried the power of generations, that it symbolised culture, resilience, and pride. But soon, the world around her would challenge that pride, making her question something as simple and natural as the way her hair grew, with views that tried to strip away her confidence. Today, I stand here fully embracing what my hair represents- strength, heritage, and identity. And that’s exactly what I wanted to share in today’s session. Thank you to DS Smith for giving me the platform to speak on this, and to everyone who joined- your engagement meant the world. These conversations are never easy, but they are absolutely necessary. During today’s session, we explored: - The deep cultural significance of Black hair- historically and in the modern world - The impact of hair discrimination on mental health and self-esteem - The myths that still persist around Black hair and how they continue to harm - The vital role of initiatives like the The Halo Collective which are pushing for real change in UK workplaces But beyond these points, we talked about taking action. Because change doesn’t just happen with policies- it starts with each of us. If there’s one takeaway, it’s this: Our hair is not a barrier. It is a celebration of culture, identity, and strength. This subject means so much to me because I’ve lived it. I’ve felt the weight of those biases, and I’ve also experienced the empowerment that comes from finally embracing who I am. I hope today’s session sparks reflection. Let’s keep challenging assumptions, pushing for more inclusive environments, and creating workplaces where everyone can show up fully and authentically. This is about more than just hair- it’s about dignity, identity, and respect. ✊🏾 Thank you so much to Jessica Heap Assoc CIPD and Shannon J. for inviting me to speak today. It really has been the highlight of my Black History Month. #BlackHairIsProfessional #Inclusion #HairDiscrimination #HaloCode #DiversityandInclusion
