  • “I looked forward to coming, even though it was a treatment. I’ve never been able to say that in my life. “I’ve completed my TMS now and I am miles happier than I was to begin with. They’ve given me my smile back.” Nikita was struggling with depression and felt a burden, before being referred to Pennine Care TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) service. TMS treatment uses pulsating magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain, so they can repair and build connection. It worked wonders for Nikita, who found it to be ‘amazing’ and thinks the world should know about it.

Hello Linkedin! We are thrilled to introduce the Care Responders study! The Care Responders Study aims to understand and improve mental health crisis care for young people and families. In our study, we want to hear about young people's experiences of receiving support for mental health from first responders. We are also evaluating a new joint response to mental health crisis, in association with Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust and Greater Manchester Police We want to improve crisis mental health care for young people through understanding how services can work together, and we need your help! We have worked with young people to hear why it is so important to involve young people in research. Join Sarah Parry and our team as we invite young people, parents/caregivers, and first responders to take part and share stories from experience to inform the future of crisis mental healthcare! If you are interested to participate, reach out to us on: pcn-tr.care-responders@nhs.net 07521 000486 Or visit our website: https://lnkd.in/eM4DG65F #CareResponders #PennineCareResearch #MentalHealth

  • We’re working on two research projects to improve emergency or crisis mental health services for young people: The ‘CAMH-crisis2’ study is looking for 16-25 year olds - and parents or carers - who have been supported by the mental health joint response service/ vehicle (pictured) run with Greater Manchester Police. The study is run by Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd and The University of Manchester, to take part you can contact them on CAMH-crisis2@cardiff.ac.uk or at: https://lnkd.in/eW_7W6eZ We’re also launching our ‘care responders’ study next week, which is for 5-18 year olds and their parents/carers who have used a youth emergency mental health service in the last two years. We’ll be sharing more details next week, you can also contact us on pcn-tr.care-responders@nhs.net or check out this link: https://lnkd.in/eaGjrj9U #PennineCareResearch

When working with patients in a neurological capacity, we have to be constantly assessing for presentational changes. Most of the time, cognitive assessments are just "paper"; they can be particularly draining for a patient who is cognitively impaired, or may have lost the capacity to write as a result of cognitive decline, and this may mean they struggle, or outright refuse, to engage. I'm fortunate that within Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust I'm allowed the freedom to be quite creative in overcoming this: Yesterday we put out several bowls of common crisp types for a group of outpatients and invited them to, in order, guess the flavours and see if they remember the brands. It worked perfectly in gleaning information on spatial awareness, hand-eye coordination, tremors, recognition of turn, courtesy, lack of inhibition, taste capability, smell capability, fine motor skills and memory capabilities. The results of assessments like this contribute to confirming information such as where brain cell death may be occurring, if it is global or localised or if it is progressing differently to the anticipated rate. Particularly useful when there may be a long wait for a CT scan!

  • For Speak Up Month, we caught up with Kevin Robinson, our freedom to speak up guardian, to hear how his role makes a positive impact. He said, “I’ve seen many changes happen as a result of people speaking up, not only when things have gone wrong, but when someone has identified a way to improve things but has not been listened to. These can range from changes to processes and systems to eliminate unsafe clinical practices, to larger fundamental changes to policies that affect everyone. Speak up ambassadors are key to this work, and raise the profile of speaking up and translate this learning to improve the safety and experience of all." We are currently looking for colleagues from all backgrounds and bands to become speak up guardians - there are more details about how to apply on our intranet. #SpeakUpMonth #FTSU

Emma Pickup, Partner in our Health Team, recently had the privilege of interviewing Claudette Elliott, a Non Executive Director and Deputy Chair for two NHS trusts - Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital - about how NHS board leadership can improve health disparities for Black communities as part of our #BlackHistoryMonth focus on #ReclaimingNarratives. Claudette and Emma discussed: ➡ the heart and mental health disparities that affect Black patients and what needs to change to improve these ➡ the importance of the board's role in visibly building a culture of inclusivity to achieve outcomes ➡ how leadership needs to be bold enough to own up when things go wrong and act to make improvements ➡ how to move beyond the narrative of it being "simple to say but not easy to do" 👉 Watch the full interview with Claudette here: https://lnkd.in/eaj8xfkt #Leadership #BHM #NED #NHS #BoardLeadership

  • "We role played scenarios as doctors and nurses, and with the use of props to demonstrate how blood tests are taken, we built a trusting relationship with Craig over time. "With the support of his family, he could eventually tolerate touch from myself, and then others, and allowed us to pretend to take a blood test.” Jade and colleagues at Bury adult learning disability service helped Craig to feel more comfortable around healthcare workers, so he can attend vital medical appointments. Previously he found health appointments involving blood tests, vaccinations, or body scans very difficult and would have severe anxiety before and after attending. • Thanks to everyone doing their bit to stop the spread of covid and flu over winter. Keeping these viruses at bay helps colleagues to stay well and keep providing essential mental health, learning disability and autism services. For anyone who works for us, the vaccines are available for free at a number of locations. Full details are on your intranet.
