About us

We are a not-for-profit retrofit service in North West England, offering clear, independent advice and support to help plan, procure and deliver householder retrofit projects to a high standard. Supported by community energy co-operative Carbon Co-op, our aim is to help more householders to retrofit their properties. We were established as an independent Community Benefit Society and capitalised by a successful community share offer in 2021. We have been trading independently since January 2022. As well as delivering householder retrofit services, we offer contractor training and carry out consultancy work for community energy organisations, educational institutions, and local authorities around the UK. Our software tool, Home Retrofit Planner, is used by a range of community energy organisations across the UK to support the delivery of more and better retrofit.

  • ‘In an era where the climate crisis is a pressing reality, charities and social enterprises play a crucial role….This report aims to shed light on the current landscape for retrofit delivery – focusing on nonprofit providers – so that we can work towards increasing the knowledge, capacity and skills within the sector to deliver this vital work.’ Jonathan Atkinson recently contributed insights to this report on the role of non profits and social enterprises, authored by Centre for Sustainable Energy. 'The role of non-profit organisations in the provision of retrofit services in England' shares the work existing providers are doing to support retrofit and highlights the opportunities for sectoral growth. • Great to hear our Camilla raising the profile for retrofit on national radio 👏 Though Camilla doesn't talk directly about People Powered Retrofit, she does cover retrofit basics and brings in her experience from the work she has completed on her own home. Camilla is always the advocate for ventilation and airtightness, and she flies the flag once more. A podcast to listen to! The piece starts at 31:20 ☀️

Brilliant to hear my esteemed colleague Camilla Govan on national radio on Wednesday! She was appearing on Radio 4's 'You and Yours' programme highlighting some retrofit basics and the need for ventilation to be considered equally alongside air-tightness and insulation. Camilla also 'walks the talk' as she is tackling her own retrofit currently - her hands-on approach has real world relevance and brings further value to her role in her day job at People Powered Retrofit. The piece (also featuring Anastasia Mylona, Technical Director at CIBSE) starts at 31:20, and Camilla's section is from 35:40. #retrofit #insulation #ventilation #DIY #bbc #radio4 #YouandYours #PeoplePoweredRetrofit #CIBSE https://lnkd.in/ex6rufhk

  • Surveyor stories! Mark Crunden-White is one of our surveyors, and comes across all the weird and wonderful and wiggly parts of houses we don't usually know about. In this LinkedIn post, Mark shares a bit more about one property he surveyed recently and the lessons learned on it! Posted with kind permission of the owners.

    Domestic Energy Efficiency

Caveat emptor (buyer beware)! Our clients moved into their home and thought all was well with the recently (2019) constructed rear extension. After all the work had a Building Control certificate, so it was surely done right, right? Wrong. Amongst other issues (‘that’ll do’ levels of insulation for instance) the new construction has blocked off the air bricks that provided airflow to the original, wooden sub-floor. No extra provision has been made, so our clients are now experiencing serious damp and mould issues that will require time and money to remediate. I only discovered this when we lifted the floor and I went down into the void. To compound their misery, presumably as part of the same project, all the ground floor  radiators were replaced with direct-acting electric underfloor heating, with a whopping 10mm, yes, 10mm of insulation, meaning it costs too much to actually ever be used and they have subsequently experienced frozen pipes INSIDE their home. Not good.   Bonus points to anyone who looks at the rear elevation photo and notices that the (also recently redone) roof tiles have also been incorrectly laid - one on top of the other, as opposed to offset (brick pattern), meaning there’s an increased chance of rainwater ingress, and a definite chance they’ll be shelling out yet more money to repair something that could have just been done right in the first place. The upshot? The clients’ retrofit budget will be greatly diminished by the remedial works that their home requires. It’s extremely frustrating that people wanting to do the ‘right thing’ are hampered by poorly undertaken work, and toothless, under-resourced regulation. It will be interesting to see how responses to the Building Safety Act develop in the domestic refurb sphere. Hopefully, the additional emphasis on compliance will save some future homebuyers a load of cash, upheaval and heartache. #retrofit #surveying #BuildingControl #BuildingSafetyAct #bodgers

I've had a great couple of days in Scotland for People Powered Retrofit visiting the Loco Home Retrofit head office in Glasgow and then attending and speaking at the Changeworks Connect conference today. There were so many highlights and things I've learnt, but the thing I am taking away from our panel on One Stop Shops and Retrofit Agencies is that there are now a critical mass of services working across the UK enabling sharing and learning to take place between us. We're about to launch a Community of Practice around community led retrofit, but conferences like this provide a great opportunity to learn and spread the word.

  • As part of our work on the Green Homes Finance Accelerator Pilot, we’ve been working with Association of British Credit Unions, Metro Moneywise Credit Union , Carbon Co-op, and Loco Home Retrofit to support Credit Unions in offering Green Home Improvement finance to their members and help more people access retrofit. Credit unions are well placed to support their members to improve energy efficiency measures, but navigating the supply chain is complex, and members often find it challenging to find trusted, competent installers to make improvements to their homes. That’s why we’ve developed a new toolkit for Credit Unions, designed to help them understand the retrofit sector and forge partnerships that make green lending more impactful - we published the report yesterday following a great online session with ABCUL. In ‘Credit Unions and the Green Home Improvement Sector: A Toolkit for Supply Chain Engagement’, we: 🔎 Break down the retrofit supply chain 💡 Explore opportunities for Credit Unions & retrofit providers to collaborate 🌍 Share case studies of successful partnerships in the UK and beyond 📖 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eKyFm2Jb Whether you're a Credit Union looking to get into green lending, or a retrofit provider looking to understand how you could collaborate with the mutual finance sector, we hope this report helps to outline key opportunities and risks for cross-sector collaboration. #GreenFinance #CreditUnions #Retrofit #Sustainability #GreenLoans #Collaboration
