🚀 AI in Healthcare: Are We Really Unlocking Its Full Potential? We’ve all seen the numbers—nearly 1,000 AI-enabled medical devices authorized by the FDA as of 2024, as highlighted in this recent MedTech Dive article. Impressive, right? But here’s the real question: ARE WE MOVING FAST ENOUGH TO HARNESS AI’S TRUE IMPACT ON HEALTHCARE? It feels like we’re stuck in a loop of celebrating approvals, but what about REAL-WORLD INTEGRATION? We’re running the risk of AI FATIGUE, where devices look promising on paper but don’t yet deliver the game-changing outcomes we’re all hoping for. 💡 WHAT IF THE REAL OPPORTUNITY ISN’T JUST AI IN DEVICES BUT BUILDING AI ECOSYSTEMS? Imagine interoperable AI tools that talk to each other across clinical trials, EHR systems, patient monitoring, and diagnostics. It’s time to shift the focus from device-by-device progress to SYSTEM-LEVEL INNOVATION. And while we’re at it—WHO’S TRULY BENEFITING from all these breakthroughs? Are these innovations reaching underrepresented populations, or staying confined to high-end institutions? AI in healthcare is only as revolutionary as the people it serves. Lastly, the REAL SILENT REVOLUTION might not be happening in the diagnostic suite, but in BACK-OFFICE OPERATIONS. AI that streamlines clinical trial workflows, automates patient recruitment, and eliminates bottlenecks could end up having a bigger impact on patient outcomes than the devices we focus on. #DigitalHealth #AI #HealthcareInnovation #ClinicalTrials #MedTech https://lnkd.in/esWGiJDu t

Empowering Healthcare Ecosystems through AI Innovation

💡 My thoughts on what’s stopping the uptake of AI in healthcare 🤔 At our latest workshop at the AI for Pharma & Healthcare conference https://lnkd.in/d9iSf5_N in Amsterdam, Paula Salme Sandrak and I asked our audience about the challenges they’re facing when developing health AI solutions. The image you see here describes the responses. What stood out for me was the following comment: "Shiny new toy." I get it but I also don’t get it all… Even though I’ve worked in healthcare now for well over a decade, as an AI engineer, I’m always somewhat of an outsider. There are also perks to this, as it gives me some outside perspective. What I’m noticing when listening to healthcare business leaders, is that they seem to mix up simple automation and robotics with the real potential of AI in healthcare. By definition, shiny new toys are designed for temporary, gratifying, yet short-term use. This is NOT what role AI is going to play in healthcare. Let me be clear. AI is not just speed and automation. I’m surprised that many decision makers still don't fully recognize this, even though we all have access to way more advanced, high-performing AI tools that demonstrate a potential that goes way beyond the commonly used LLMs. So what is the extent of this potential? AI will not only help you reach your goals faster, it can also guide you to discover completely new goals. AI can help to understand ecosystems, incl. healthcare ecosystems, more effectively, using angles that humans alone may not even consider. It’s easy to be trenched in old workflows, old disease models, and see anything new as a threat. AI can not just suggest these new ways but it can also help effectively define futures that seem so out of the typical way of thinking, yet abide by the values and needs defined by us.  While much is said about the risks of AI, and extensive efforts made to implement regulations, I would encourage us to be more balanced. It’s important to recognize that AI itself does not inherently make decisions that are risky or beneficial—it is us, humans, who control and direct these tools. To give an example: imagine the effort required to discover how a traumatic childhood event might affect someone's lifestyle, leading to hypertension in their 40s. 🧠➡️❤️ If we had the necessary longitudinal data for such a study, AI could potentially uncover this correlation. Now, forget why we might need this specific study—the real question is: how much would our understanding of certain diseases change if we allow AI to reveal such insights? 🧩🔬 So, we’re not just looking at a tool that saves time/costs—AI is pushing us toward a deeper understanding of the world. 🌍 Don’t get me wrong, we’re not becoming all-knowing gods, but : AI is here to stay. No matter what the next shiny new toy is, AI is not one of them. #DigitalTwins #HealthcareTransformation #AIForGood

Wow, It's already been a week since I presented at the AI for Pharma & Healthcare launch conference in Amsterdam. I was lucky to also host the Drug Design stream over the conferences two days. There were lots of fantastic insights on how AI can elevate drug discovery and drug design, and I enjoyed chatting to everyone. My presentation was on how quantum computing can contribute to every step of the vlaue chain, not just drug discovery. I'm already looking forward to next years event. Big thanks to Nikki Kandola for organising and inviting me along and to Neil Ewington to chairing the event so well. #AI  #AIinPharma #PharmaIQ
