...because every day is precious.

About us

Phyllis Tuckwell provides supportive and end of life care to adult patients and their families who are living with an advanced or terminal illness, in West Surrey and part of North East Hampshire. Every day we support over 250 patients, carers and relatives either at the Hospice, out in the community or in patients’ own homes. All of the care we give is provided free of charge, however as NHS and Government funding covers just 20% of our costs, we need to fundraise over £20,000 each and every day to ensure we can continue this level of care. Phyllis Tuckwell now has 20 retail shops across the catchment area which provide vital funds; these shops are always in need of stock from donations of furniture, clothes, bric-a-brac and more. Our fundraising team manages a full calendar of activities and events for our supporters from overseas challenges, skydives, marathons and cycling to parties, golf days, fun runs and so much more. Corporate Partnerships with local companies and businesses are vital to Phyllis Tuckwell, as they help us to ensure that our financial future is secure, and that we can continue to provide supportive and end of life care for our patients and their families. If your business is interested in becoming a Charity Partner, please contact us or see our website for more information.

  • Our occupational therapy (OT) team has a range of specialist skills and training to enable them to assess and support each individual patient. “One of their OTs visited to see what support she could give me. She provided equipment to help me get in and out of bed, taught me anxiety management techniques, helped me to think about what I might need as my condition changes, and arranged for a carer’s assessment, to see if we can get additional support. She realised that we needed some emotional support too, and referred us for counselling, which we found really helpful.” – Andrew, who we cared for. Our OT team supports patients at all stages of their illness and helps them to remain as independent as possible. It’s all about continuing to live life fully and enjoy occupations that are meaningful to them. #PhyllisTuckwell #OccupationalTherapyWeek

  • Alison is our Chair of the Trustees, and her background is in nursing. “Phyllis Tuckwell has been a constant throughout a large part of my career, renowned for the exemplary care it provides for those who need its support; a beacon of light in the darkest days. It feels to me like a close-knit family.” “The Board of Trustees is responsible for making sure that the governance of the organisation is run to the best of its ability, that the culture of the organisation is open and transparent, and that we make best strategic decisions for the organisation. Because of my background, I’m really interested in the operational side. All teams do such an amazing job, which is much appreciated by the Board.” “When I was nursing, I learnt so much from spending time with the elderly, and in intensive care. Being able to give people a good death when it became an inevitability was so important. You can’t underestimate the care that people need at this time of life, and if we can support people at this difficult time, then that is an incredibly precious thing.” #PhyllisTuckwell #TrusteesWeek

  • Living with an advanced or terminal illness can be stressful, and our patients can benefit from support to help them manage feelings of stress and anxiety. Creative activities such as drawing and painting can help to ease stress and promote feelings of peacefulness, wellbeing and confidence. Our weekly ArtScape art group offers our Living Well patients an opportunity to explore their creativity in an informal, social environment, where they can meet others and find peer support. We also offer 1-2-1 art therapy sessions on request. “ArtScape was brilliant; it really got a hold of me,” said Nigel, one of our patients. “I loved working with the watercolours. It’s nice to be with people who have got mutual experiences, and the volunteers are good too, they bring people together.” #PhyllisTuckwell #StressAwarenessDay

  • Ken is another of our trustees, and currently supports our Finance sub-committee and New Hospice Steering Group in particular. “I originally qualified as a Chartered Accountant, and then moved into the world of seismic data processing. As a trustee, I enjoy being able to give something back and provide assistance based upon my professional background. There is something very special about what Phyllis Tuckwell does and how it does it. I believe that the benefit our service offers to patients and their families is immeasurable, being based firmly upon the extraordinary skills, commitment and dedication of our staff and volunteers.” #PhyllisTuckwell #TrusteesWeek

  • It’s National Occupational Therapy Week! ‘Occupations’ aren’t just jobs, they are any activity that we need, want or like to do in order to look after our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Some occupations are common to us all, such as washing, eating and sleeping, while others can be specific to each person, such as studying, caring for others, playing sports, or taking part in hobbies. Occupational therapy is about enabling people to continue doing what matters to them, as independently as possible. Our occupational therapists (OTs) run sessions to help patients manage symptoms such as breathlessness, anxiety or pain, which can prevent them from continuing with their occupations. Others may need equipment or changes to their home environment to help them to be as independent as possible, and our OTs can help with this, too. #PhyllisTuckwell #OccupationalTherapyWeek

  • Our trustees play a key role in helping to advise and guide our Senior Management Team, in making the important decisions that influence the future of Phyllis Tuckwell. They are all volunteers and bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to our organisation. Emma supports us with her knowledge of and experience in digital transformation, marketing and communication. “It’s a busy time, given the investment the organisation is making to build the new Hospice, and the team are doing a super job. I feel really privileged to help in a small way to support Phyllis Tuckwell to be successful. ‘Because every day is precious’ is an important mantra for us all to live by, whether we are ill or not. I feel both a sense and an importance of place here. Volunteering for an organisation like Phyllis Tuckwell grounds you, and I’m very grateful for that.” #PhyllisTuckwell #TrusteesWeek
