📢 The Arts Council England Cultural Freelancers Study is out! 📢 And here’s the headline: This report focuses only on freelancers, and guess what? Almost half (46%) of respondents are parents and/ or carers. That’s twice as many parents and carers are in this study than any study of recent times which includes people who are employed and freelancers. In theory being a freelancer, with the flexibility it affords, is ideal for meeting work and care responsibilities. In reality though, PiPA research highlights that it doesn’t work like that. The findings from our 2024 Balancing Act data are stark: ➡️ 97% of freelance parents and carers are turning down work due to caring responsibilities. ➡️ 63% rely on friends and family for support—compared to only 8% of employed parents. What if you don’t have that support network? ➡️ Freelancers who are parents or carers are earning just £15,000 per year, yet 80% say they’d work more if they could. This is a wake-up call for the sector. We have almost 2,000 parents and carers (that’s 4000 families) asking funders and employers to recognise the unique challenges parents and carers who work freelance in our industry face. The time to act is now. If you work with freelancers, read the report and ask yourself: What can I do? Come and talk to us and we’ll share some of the brilliant ways PiPA partner organisations are making sure that no-one has to choose between having a family or working in the arts. Contact our programmes team for further information programmes@pipacampaign.com We look forward to working with Arts Council England and the sector to deliver change for parents and carers who are freelancers. 🎶 Calling all Musicians' Union members... We're so pleased to be part of a new Tonic Music for Mental Health Peer support group, along with Music Minds Matter & Musicians' Union. Starting Friday 1st November 2024, this will be a six-week online Peer Support Group exclusively for parents and/or carers who are members of the Musicians' Union. The group will be facilitated by Jade Hughes, who is a trainee psychotherapist with several years experience working in the music industry as a classically trained singer. Our co-founder and co-CEO Cassie Raine said: "Mental health support is crucial for parents and carers in the performing arts who often face unique pressures, including irregular schedules, financial instability, and managing the demands of the industry. Add children or care responsibilities into the mix and the pressure can be overwhelming. All this leads to increased stress and burnout and impacts well-being. We’re delighted to be partnering with Tonic Music, Music Minds Matter and the Musicians’ Union to bring this offer to parents and carers for the first time to bring this much-needed mental health support to our community." 🔗More info and sign-up https://lnkd.in/emRJdN7q

We were thrilled to co-host a special performance of June Carter Cash: The Woman, Her Music and Me, alongside our incredible partners Grid Iron and National Theatre of Scotland. Since 2016, we've been proud to collaborate with National Theatre Scotland, who have been involved in implementing PiPA’s best practices across Scotland’s arts sector. It was inspiring to see the connections between #JuneAndCharlene's lives as performers and mothers brought to life on stage, perfectly capturing the essence of our mission - to support and celebrate parents and carers in the Scottish arts workforce. PiPA’s “Discovering Hidden Carers Through Theatre” blog published back in June 2024, revealed the challenges and the growing need for carer support. "Now, I See" by Lanre Malaolu at Theatre Royal Stratford East was a powerful exploration of different emotions. As the story unfolded between three brothers, it became clear that it also deeply addresses the often overlooked reality of being an unpaid carer. This play highlights the challenges faced by carers in the performing arts - a theme we've explored further in our blog: https://lnkd.in/eEHFnHhB #PiPA #PiPACampaign #SupportCarers #SupportParents #NowISee

We’re excited to share insights from a recent interview with the talented actress, MD and vocal coach Sioned Saunders by Haydn Corrodus. She delves into her journey through the arts and music industry, highlighting memorable moments like starring alongside her husband in a production of Lord of the Rings. Sioned discusses the challenges of balancing parenting with a career in the arts and the benefits of a musical education.
