In today's episode of the UK government making terrible decisions: Giving AI companies free access to copyrighted work. Great idea - let's just toss artists' livelihoods into the AI void. In protest, 1,000 musicians released a silent album called 'Is This What We Want?', expressing the potential silencing of artists with silence itself. The album features empty studios and performance spaces, symbolising the creative black hole this law could create (proceeds go to Help Musicians). The proposed law requires artists to opt out of having their work used as AI training data - basically gift-wrapping 90-95% of artists' work to AI companies on a silver platter. Whilst there is a lot of positivity on the potential of AI, the reality is that a lot of people are still worried and unsure. This 'opt-out' law isn't going to help that - it feels much less like protection and more like predatory behaviour. Thankfully some organisations are helping people navigate the AI apocalypse (take a look at the work from Girlguiding). Maybe the government should take some notes. Consistency helps the algorithm help you. 3️⃣ Real-time feedback: Trying out a new sound? Clips and polls let you see what resonates before you drop the full track. 4️⃣ Networking made easy: Other artists, producers, playlist curators—they’re all there. A quick DM can open big doors. Find what authentically fits you—studio clips, song snippets, lyric breakdowns, even rants about your creative process. It’s all about making socials work for your music, not the other way around.
