PISCES Partnership’s Titing Reza Fahrisa engaged with the DLH (Rogojampi's sanitation workers area—Service Office of Environment) to introduce concepts of plastic reuse. As dedicated sanitation workers responsible for keeping Rogojampi’s streets clean, they emphasized the significant challenge posed by the overwhelming amount of plastic waste mixed with organic and non-organic waste. This mixture complicates waste management and highlights the urgent need for effective sorting before collection. We commend these sanitation workers for their commitment to encouraging the community to reduce single-use plastic. We hope to make significant strides toward a cleaner, more sustainable future. The reuse initiative arises from the collaborative vision of PISCES Partnership and Enviu, Zero Waste Living Lab (a program by Enviu) to kickstart the #ReuseRevolution concept in Banyuwangi. ........................................................... Titing Reza FAHRISA, B.Eng., M. Int'l. #PISCESPartnership #Enviu #PlasticSolution #PlasticReuse #SustainableFuture #Bersih #LingkunganHidup #WasteManagement #Kebersihan #PenguranganSampah #Konservasi #CommunityAction #SampahPlastik

PISCES Partnership recently facilitated a visit by Titing Reza FAHRISA, B.Eng., M. Int'l. Rel. to Ms. Uut, the proud owner of a homemade tempeh cracker business in Singojuruh, #Banyuwangi. Their discussion focused on the role of plastics in her operations and the exploration of sustainable alternatives. Ms. Uut recognized the significance of plastics due to their affordability but also expressed concerns about the cost of alternatives, such as banana leaves. Due to the difficulty and high cost of sourcing banana leaves, she made the tough decision to opt for plastic for processing and packaging her tempeh crackers. This conversation underscores a critical challenge for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs): finding a balance between cost-effectiveness and sustainability. The long-term benefits of reducing single-use plastics are undeniable. By seeking out cost-effective, reusable, and eco-friendly options, businesses like Ms. Uut's can not only thrive but also play a vital role in fostering a cleaner, greener future. ................................................................... #PISCESPartnership #PlasticPollution #ReduceSingleUsePlastic #EcoFriendlyAlternatives #PISCESInitiative #SustainableIndonesia #IndonesiaBersih #ZeroWasteID #GoGreenIndonesia #Sustainable #ReducePlastic #SustainableLiving #GreenFuture #ClimateAction #SMEs

We are thrilled to see the impactful findings from this vital research on marine plastic pollution! This study not only highlights the urgent need for action in Indonesia but also underscores the interconnectedness of ecosystem services and human well-being. We are proud to support interdisciplinary research that informs sustainable practices and policies. Thank you, Carya Maharja, Radisti A. Praptiwi, Sainal Sainal, Prawesti Wulandari, Matthew Ashley, Kayleigh Wyles, Joyashree Roy, I Gede Hendrawan, Professor Susan Jobling, and Melanie Austen for your dedication to this crucial issue! #PISCESPartnership #PlasticSolution #MarinePlasticPollution, #EcosystemServices #SustainablePractices, #InterdisciplinaryResearch, #Indonesia, #EnvironmentalImpact, #ResearchForChange, #ClimateAction, #PlasticPollutionSolutions.
💡 Our new research paper | #MarinePlasticPollution threatens the flourishing of people and planet. 🌏 🌊 Million metric tonnes of plastics are released into the sea and trapped in coastal environments around the world. ❓ Yet, not much is known about how the accumulating plastics impact coastal #EcosystemServices and the health and #wellbeing of people reliant on these ecosystem services. Our study is one of the first to address this knowledge gap. 🔎 We estimated these impacts by conducting an iterative survey with a panel of expert stakeholders in #Indonesia, an ecologically diverse tropical archipelago and one of the world's biggest emitters of marine plastics. 👉 What we found: - Marine plastic pollution in coastal areas of Indonesia was predicted to increase over the next 10 years. Islands with bigger population densities and GDPs (Gross Domestic Products) would experience larger increases. - Marine plastic pollution was predicted to cause declines in all ecosystem services provided by a diverse range of coastal habitats. - Coastal habitats most vulnerable to declining ecosystem services consisted of, in descending order, mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and sandy beaches. 👉 Also, the impacts on health and well-being differed according to the ecosystem types. For instance, - Declining mangrove ecosystem services due to plastic pollution were linked with reduced household income, and - Plastic-induced decline of coral reef ecosystem services was linked with deteriorating mental health. ❗ Key takeaways: - Marine plastic pollution in coastal areas may cause complex social-ecological impacts that would be difficult to disentangle. - Preventive measures targeting the upstream level of the plastic lifecycle are thus essential to mitigate the multifaceted risks. The article is available here: https://lnkd.in/ePDzdR7w (Please message me if you want a copy!) This interdisciplinary study was conducted as a part of the UK Research and Innovation - funded PISCES Partnership research programme. The study was led by Indonesian early career researchers (ECRs) at Universitas Esa Unggul (myself, Radisti A. Praptiwi, Sainal Sainal, Prawesti Wulandari) who benefited and learned immensely from close collaboration with colleagues from the UK, Thailand, and Indonesia, consisting of: Matthew Ashley, Kayleigh Wyles, Joyashree Roy, I Gede Hendrawan, Professor Susan Jobling, Melanie Austen.
