Achieving and maintaining a recognised rationale for what we do, how we do it and why we do it, is very important to me, personally and professionally. And so, I am very, very pleased to say we have maintained recognition from the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors who have reaccredited our most popular workshop, the 2-Day Introduction to Human Factors and Non-Technical Skills. 'A highly engaging facilitated workshop which provides a deep and sticky learning experience resulting in an understanding of human factors and non-technical skills.' Have a look and get in touch to discuss making this part of how you co-create safety within your teams and organisation. https://lnkd.in/eEuzERHs

Creating psychologically safe workplaces. Next week, I am joining Sharon Blackman OBE, Annmarie Carvalho, and Jude Cragg at the MAD World Festival. Our panel is chaired by Richard Martin and we will spend 45 minutes challenges and opportunities around how to create psychologically safe workplaces in the legal profession. PPWD are a signatory of the Mindful Business Charter, and I know the challenges cannot be overcome in 45 minutes. However, I do feel that only through open dialogues such as these we can truly understand what is needed. https://lnkd.in/eccNrEc9

On Thursday 27 September, along with Mark Lovatt, I attended the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors, 'Think Human' exhibition in the Museum of Making, Derby. This year is the 75th anniversary of the CIEHF and the 'Think Human' display is focused at discovering a world designed for people. PPWD are involved as one of the sponsors, and we have an exhibit which demonstrates some key principles of the information processing model. A model which provides the key to understanding and managing non-technical skills. We found the exhibit reveals the often-hidden human factors behind everyday life, from how we get around to the places we work. It aims to inspire a new generation of ergonomists through showcasing a range of career choices.  I know that attracting individuals to the profession can be a challenge, as few notice when ergonomics and human centred design is undertaken well! We notice an omission, but not when it is present! The exhibition runs until 22 December and entry is free. Along with the PPWD exhibit, you get free entry to the rest of the museum and a range of child and young adult orientated workshops and programmes. So why not organise a visit? https://lnkd.in/erB5tgMi

Compassionate Safety - Safety by People, Not by Numbers - EHS - BSc MA MCGI FInstLM

Beyond Safety: What the Phoenix Project can tell us about safety. In the novel The Phoenix Project, the protagonists wrestle with DevOps (which is concerned with a set of practices, tools and a cultural philosophy that automate and integrate software development and IT teams), such that they realise that IT is the ‘Central Nervous System’ of their business – not simply an add-on that ‘just needs to get with the programme.’ By considering the flow of raw materials into and product out of a manufacturing facility, the characters are able to reimagine the flow of information through the business via IT. So, what has this got to do with safety? The characters in The Phoenix Project get trapped. They believe they have to automate and accelerate cycle times to increase profitability. However, by taking Elon Musk’s approach to the design process, they should have started from a position humility, and have considered the process of deleting parts or processes to optimise the design. Therefore, what would happen to an organisation if we removed the safety management system? Would it become ‘unsafe’ overnight? Whether it would or wouldn’t become unsafe, what does that tell us about work as done? www.ppwd.co.uk

Who is the safest person in your team / organisation? Well, first of all, how will you measure 'safest'? - Take an example from elite sport. There are 2 types of record books. One captures the objective data with statistics and numbers. The other type of record is the (auto)biographies, the anecdotal stories, the depth, messiness and complexity of being human. - If we just look back and read the stats, then winning (not having an accident) is everything. It is the easiest way to come up with the GOAT, whether that is as a team or a person. - However, if we value ethics, morals, the manner, style, character and personality; the true richness of what it is to be human (and 'safe' emerges). For me, it is far more important to consider the ‘whys’ and 'hows'. A safety statistic is unlikely to inspire others, yet a story of how and why the statistic occurred will inspire and create a legacy of positive behaviour. #compassionatesafety #safetyleadership #safetyculture

Learning ought to be enjoyable, and it will probably feel uncomfortable, and tiring. - In any industry and sector, scheduling learning into business is critical. - For most safety-critical industries, this will mean incorporating learning activity properly into rosters and shift patterns. - There needs to be a focus on preserving sleep quality, as this is so intimately linked to our ability to learn. As we gain experience, learning becomes more about doing things differently or alternatively. - It challenges how we have been doing something as it requires us to acquire the new, whilst simultaneously removing or repositioning the old. - It takes a commitment, an investment with energy, and motivation to detach, to let go and perhaps abandon old ways. - If we fail to unlearn, then we will surely fail to learn. This requires courage to do things differently. However, to move forwards to change, grow and be innovative will require letting go of that past, disconnecting from the old ways. www.ppwd.co.uk - we work alongside you to learn and grow. #compassionatesafety #safetyleadership #safetyculture

Compassionate Safety - Safety by People, Not by Numbers - EHS - BSc MA MCGI FInstLM

The workplace is full of Wicked Problems, yet we always seek to tame them. Many of you will have heard about Wicked and Tame Problems. Tame ones are easily managed, have usually occurred before and have known solutions. Wicked Problems, on the other hand, have no 'right' solution and can never really be fixed. Cancer is a Wicked Problem that cannot be 'fixed' as a societal problem. However much money we invest in cures and preventative measures, it will never stop occurring. And, in the same way, safety is a Wicked Problem. The challenge we have though is we seek to treat it through Tame solutions. RAG ratings, compliance systems, slices of Swiss Cheese even! But: - Safety cannot be controlled. - Safety cannot be fixed. - Safety cannot be managed. Safety is co-created, and anything that is created by 2 people or more, and exists between them and a system of equipment can never really be tamed. Let's focus on the co-creation of safety, day in, day out. Let's engage in developing psychological safety within our workplaces. Let's give Compassionate Safety a chance. #compassionatesafety #safetyleadership #safetyculture
