One week ago today the 2024 National Social Care Conference had just come to a close. It has been so great to see and hear about the new connections, conversations and ideas that were sparked at NSCC24, and the inspiring evening event, Connect: Under the Dome. From the beginning, our conference planning team’s vision was clear: to create a space for colleagues to connect, share ideas, talk through challenges, and drive meaningful change in social care. Developing and delivering the conference is a year-round project for us that we pour our hearts into, and seeing the inspiring personal stories shared, and the energy, collaboration, and passion from everyone in the room made all the planning worthwhile! Whether through insightful keynotes, people with lived experiences of social care generously sharing their stories, interactive workshops, or spontaneous hallway conversations, the sense of community that was created together by all who attended was very special, and something that we know supports and inspires people to continue to give their best to in their roles in social care. As event organisers and the Business Delivery Unit for ADSS Cymru, it was a privilege to create space for social care professionals from across Wales and all different parts of the sector to explore their shared commitment to shaping the future of social care. NSCC24’s evening event, Connect: Under the Dome, pushed the boundaries of what a conference ‘evening ‘do’ can be. The Association of Directors of Social Services (ADSS) Cymru team, led by Lance Carver and supported by Sarah Day, had a visionary idea to offer something inspiring and celebratory to social care professionals, and partnering with Hijinx Theatre allowed us to produce something truly memorable. So much thought went it to how the event should look and feel and it was so special to see all the team’s ideas come together:a relaxed networking opportunity peppered with performance, learning and thought-provoking conversation, and featuring not only stellar performances, panel contributions and compering from Hijinx’s talented artists, but also award winning comedian and foster carer, Kiri Pritchard-Mclean. Now we need to imagine how we’re going top this next time! Thank you to, first and foremost, to ADSS Cymru for trusting us to deliver your flagship event alongside you. And thank you to all the speakers, sponsors, exhibitors, participants and attendees: you’re the ones who make NSCC24 the vital, enriching space for Wales’ social care sector that it is. We can’t wait to see the developing impact of these conversations, and yes—we’re already thinking about next year! Not often that you get 2 senior leaders of Social Care and Health joint presenting at events, taking about the future and the immediate impact but recognising the current challenges of working together. Lance Carver from Association of Directors of Social Services (ADSS) Cymru and @darren hughes from Welsh NHS Confederation at #NSCC24. I’ve badly summarised what was a fascinating talk: The immediate impact is here. We have to support people to stay well and work together across Health and Social Care. There are big data challenges that our pressure on this such as: - In Wales we have average 2 year older gap than England. - The rising cost of diabetes. - Increase with cardiovascular disease - Aging population - Surprisngly less children under 15 Whilst the figure are future looking. These are all real challenges we are facing right now. That means future support plans have to look different. The crossover from cardiovascular to dementia for example is just one area that puts additional demand on services. Demand is increasing in terms of complexity and significance. The conversation isn’t just about number of beds. There has to be focus on community and keeping people well being. Again technology has a role to play around monitoring and fall detection. What can be done at home and in care homes can transform that journey into the capacities of those ‘bed spaces’ in hospital. Less people in hospital beds is a success story. The number of Ld beds has halved and that should be celebrated as they are housed in the community now. This is inevitably linked to delayed pathways - another controversial area. The amount that has to happen in 48 hours before it is labelled as ‘delayed’ is huge. It is complicated and challenging. Delays will happen but the focus should be on the quality of care not the figures. Think about how much time you spend planning a holiday. Then imagine planning where you are going to spend the rest of your life in 48 hours. Ressuringly whilst there are some differences in the priority areas between health and social care, there is increasing joined up thinking and a joint comment to the wellbeing of the individual. A positive discussion that doesn’t shy away from the big challenges.
