On this International Coming Out Day, we honour the individual journeys of all members of our community.🌈❤️ For some, it’s an inner knowing, while for others, a continuous process. For many, it’s mustering courage in the face of potential rejection. While for still too many, a daunting reality dictated by governments criminalising LGBTQIA+ people. We take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Stonewall UK, a charity that has fought relentlessly for the past 30 years to transform the lives of LGBTQIA+ people in the UK, driving positive change in public attitudes and policy. While we’ve achieved so much, the road to equality is still long. LGBTQIA+ individuals seeking to start or grow a family face complex challenges due to both biological factors and inadequate reproductive healthcare support. Back for its 4th year next Saturday, 28 September, The Modern Family Show is designed to help individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community explore their family-building options in a safe and inclusive environment. 🌈💕 We asked the team of experts behind the show to share some key insights on the reality of LGBTQIA+ family building. Here’s what stood out: ➤ Gay and bi+ men, and LGBTQIA+ individuals who produce sperm, do not have access to NHS fertility treatments. In contrast, cisgender men in heterosexual couples do, revealing a significant disparity in reproductive healthcare. ➤ Only 3 out of 42 Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) across England offer fair fertility funding, with some offering more than others. This postcode lottery in fertility funding only exacerbates the inequality in healthcare support faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals. ➤ 20% (600) of all adoptions in the year ending March 2023 were by same-sex couples, showing the increasing diversity in family structures. ➤ Same-gender parental order applications rose from 30% in 2014/15 to 40% in 2022/23, reflecting a positive shift in societal narratives. ➤ The UK is facing a shortage of 6,500 foster families as of May 2024, highlighting the urgent need for more support. We are incredibly proud and inspired by a young group of trans activists, by the name of Trans Kids Deserve Better, who have been protesting outside the Department for Education in Westminster since Friday. The protest follows Health Secretary Wes Streeting’s decision on 22 August to extend the ban on access to puberty blockers, as well as the draft guidance from the DfE that seeks to control and regulate the identities and experiences of trans youth, potentially violating the Equality Act and harming an entire generation of trans and non-binary children. These activists ask to embrace their identity on their own terms and to learn, grow, and thrive in a safe and inclusive environment. Their demands are not only just but urgently needed! We must do whatever is within our power to protect trans youth - please support however you can. 🩵 Share their story and learn more about the challenges faced by trans youth to amplify their voices and create inclusive spaces. 🩷 Donate to or volunteer with trans organisations that provide resources and support for trans youth. 🤍 Head over to Westminster to share good vibes and show trans love! 🖋️ Contact your local MP to oppose policies harming trans youth.
