💬 "I have been lucky enough to have worked with some amazing OTs and OTAs, who have taught me the importance of the profession and encouraged me to pursue the career I want." Mia joined the team at Priory Hospital Woodbourne as a healthcare assistant (HCA) in 2021. She currently works as a Senior Occupational Therapy Assistant and is completing an OT apprenticeship! Mia shared more about her learning journey so far: “Whilst I was a HCA I would often sit in on sessions that the occupational therapists would deliver on the wards. I admired the way in which these sessions would occupy the patients with something meaningful to them, whilst still being used as a method of assessment to identify their individual needs.” “Working within mental health can be quite daunting when you have no previous experience... Having access to the appropriate training and supervision has made me feel confident carrying out my job in the safest and least restrictive way possible.” Asked if she had any advice for others thinking of changing role, Mia said: “I would encourage others interested to shadow and observe different professionals to understand their role and see if it is something you could see yourself doing. I was not aware of the role of an OT in mental health and discovered the profession by working alongside them.
